Chapter 9

To say he didn’t understand would have been a massive understatement.

Then there were the looks passing between JC and Justin and Megan and Damian and for some reason Nick thought he should have understood.

JC stared at Justin and a thousand conversations were being held right in front of him and Nick didn’t understand where this new bond had come from.

Because JC… was staring at Justin exactly like he stared at AJ, like Nick stared at Megan. Like he knew who Justin was.

Nick was proud of AJ, he stayed at JC’s side, his hand still resting lightly on his arm as he watched the byplay between the two men. AJ didn’t scream or throw fists which would have been the norm when someone tried to come between him and JC.

Maybe AJ was feeling the same thing that he was… that Justin somehow belonged with JC. Which was just bizarre because he hadn’t felt that way four days ago and now…

Nick glanced over at Megan who was shifting on her feet. She kept glancing at him, mouth opening then shutting and finally her arms wrapped around herself. A reminder of how alike JC and Megan were.

A defensive pose, curling into herself as if she expected someone to try and hurt her. Which she should know by now that Nick would never allow.

He would protect her to his last breath.

“Justin,” JC whispered and his voice was full of agony. Of pain.

Responding, as he always did to JC’s pain, AJ moved closer to him, an arm going around his shoulder to pull him tight against his body. His chin came up and his eyes hardened as he dared Justin to say anything. To try anything.

But Justin didn’t. Justin stood silent, his eyes still focused on JC although he moved closer until JC would have had to take a step back to keep their bodies from touching. JC though didn’t move and though AJ scowled, a deep growl escaping from his throat he didn’t try to draw JC away when Justin leaned forward his forehead resting lightly against JC’s.

“I’m sorry,” Justin whispered. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean it.”

Nick frowned at the pain in Justin’s voice. And maybe that was why AJ didn’t yank JC away when Justin pressed a chaste kiss to his lips before pulling back.

AJ wrapped both arms around JC as Justin stepped back, cradling him in the protective circle of his arms.

Now he glared at Justin as JC stood there, unmoving.

“So does someone want to explain?” Nick asked. “Because ironically AJ and are still in the dark here.”

“It’s a long story,” Damian murmured, his eyes locked with Megan’s and she issued a sharp nod that Nick would have missed if he hadn’t been staring directly at her.

“It’s really not,” Justin stated. “It’s really very simple. I made a wish, JC granted it.”

“Yeah, I think we got that the first time,” AJ muttered. “But what does it mean? And don’t even tell me that you asked JC to move in here and he said yes…”

“It’s a bit more complicated than that,” Megan’s soft voice rang clear through the room.

“Just a bit,” JC agreed as he extracted himself from AJ’s arms. A soft hand touched his cheek and JC smiled wanly at him as he kissed him gently, before stepping away to stand beside Damian.

Megan moved forward then, arms still wrapped around herself as she moved to JC’s other side.

“There’s things that you don’t know,” Damian started quietly. “About us…”

“I can do this Damian,” JC cut him off shaking his head. “This is my problem; I’m the one that did this.”

“Actually I’m the one that did this,” Justin interrupted.

“Alright, someone better start explaining,” AJ’s eyes darted from Damian, to JC to Megan. Not moving away when Justin came to stand beside him.

“I was angry you see,” Justin said his hand moving to touch AJ’s arm.

“Justin…” JC’s voice was a warning, one that Justin ignored as Nick moved to the two of them.

“JC and I were arguing,” Justin continued as if JC hadn’t even spoke, his eyes hazy with remembrance and Nick hoped there was a good explanation. Because AJ was about 30 seconds away from hitting Justin from even daring to argue with JC. Regardless of when or how it happened.

“The guys, Chris and Joey and Lance, they were all inside. Waiting just in case it got violent. Because you know JC can’t fight… and when he does he looks just ridiculous…”

Justin continued, JC remained silent although Megan and Damian both jumped in with comments periodically. About a world where Justin and JC had been together, AJ had been straight and engaged and Nick had been sailing boats. About a world where Justin and JC had been fighting and JC had granted a wish that Justin said he didn’t really want. The story was to insane to be true, although Nick got the distinct impression that AJ believed it. His face was melting into one of reluctant understanding.

Because Justin’s voice was earnest and pure. Talking about waking in this strange world that he’d inadvertently created. Where his life as he knew it was totally different, that he’d lost everything.

His band, his lover, his friends. Everything was different.

He pretty much might have been able to convince Nick that he was speaking the truth if he hadn’t had to segue into the whole ‘The Guardians are not human I think they’re some type of Angel’, followed almost immediately by the ‘hey Nick did you know your girlfriend has wings’ and Nick once more thought he was smoking crack.

Would have continued thinking it if he hadn’t seen the expression on Megan’s face, the almost full body withdraw that she was doing.

Nick was surprised that she hadn’t yet mastered making herself invisible because she was certainly giving it her all.

“Do you really expect us to buy this?” Nick asked angrily since AJ was silently contemplating life or some shit.

“You don’t have to buy anything,” Justin’s voice echoed his anger. “I’m just telling you that four days ago you were a conceited ass who thought he was gods gift and… well now you’re not. I think that must be mostly Megan’s influence.”

“I was straight? And you have wings?” AJ asked softly, his eyes were locked with JC’s and Nick wondered how he’d missed that. How he’d missed the fact that JC’s eyes were filled with tears and then remembered that for the past ten minutes he’d been wondering where Justin was getting his drugs.

Megan’s arms unfolded and she nudged JC gently in the side. JC shook his head in response although his eyes never broke contact with AJ’s.

“JC,” she whispered.

“No,” JC’s voice was stiff and unwavering. “You said we had to tell them but…”

“JC,” Damian’s voice was filled with steel and JC’s head bowed. He paused for a minute and Nick exchanged a look with AJ. Because this wasn’t true.

It couldn’t be.

He ignored Justin bouncing on his toes in anticipation.

Then JC moved. Slowly pulling his shirt over his head he tossed it to the ground and stood before them clad only in jeans, head still bowed as the air around him, around Megan and Damian seemed to shimmer with an almost opalescent light.

Then slowly, so very slowly that Nick’s eyes widened and he totally forgot to breathe, white feathers, white fucking wings unfurled behind JC. Flapping once, arched to their fullest height almost six inches taller than JC himself, they then relaxed, curling around JC protectively.

“Oh,” Nick breathed.

“My,” AJ gasped.

“God,” Justin sighed.
