laniew1: (Jude and Ewan)

Well here’s the beginning of the Jude/Obi-Wan portion of the Between Space & Time universe. It was supposed to be a few short stories. Jude is being kind of talkative.

He started to get worried after the second day. He probably should have been worried after Ewan had hung up on him and then not answered the phone when he rang back, but he was used to Ewan being a prick like that.

Measures of Insanity – Part 1

He started to get worried after the second day. He probably should have been worried after Ewan had hung up on him and then not answered the phone when he rang back, but he was used to Ewan being a prick like that.

He’d waited an hour and tried again. And again.

He’d only really started to feel a twinge of something when Ewan hadn’t answer any of the successive phone calls.

He should have answered just to tell Jude to fuck off.

Because Ewan always answered. He’d get in a right snit and be pissy and annoyed on the phone… but he always picked it up. Let Jude cajole him into a better mood and they’d be right as rain and best mates again.

But this time had been different.

He’d been bitching about Sienna and Sadie and the nanny that Ewan had point blank told him that he didn’t want to know anything about and the next thing he’d known he’d been talking to air.

He’d rang back immediately, pissed and all ready to tell Ewan that he was a hypocritical bastard who was only concerned with his own problems but refused to listen to Jude’s, but he’d never answered.

And when it hit two in the morning he gave up, because Ewan didn’t answer the phone after 1:30 when he was on location; when he was home with Eve and the girls he didn’t answer it after ten.

But he hadn’t been at home.

He’d been at the flat that he’d rented and furnished and then told Jude about after the fact.

‘Eve and I are taking a bit of a break,’ he’d said. Jude hadn’t been able to place the tone in his voice. It was one that he’d never heard before.

He’d shown up at the flat with a case of beer and Jonny and they’d attempted to make Ewan laugh. He’d humored them, but hadn’t laughed. That had been when he’d figured out that things were a bit more serious than Ewan just being an overdramatic prat and Eve being the bitch that he’d always thought she’d been.

“I think I should go over there,” Jude finally said. Jonny was silent on the other end. Jude always called Jonny when he couldn’t get a hold of Ewan.

Jonny didn’t seem to mind the fact. They were all three friends, even after not having spent any considerable amount of time in the same country for years Jude still thought of Ewan and Jonny as his best mates.

“Well you’re closest,” Jonny said quietly. He could hear whispering on the other end of the phone of the female persuasion and he smirked.

Until he recognized the voice and then he wondered of Jonny had possibly lost what was left of his brains while Jude had been worrying about Ewan.

“Is that Angie there with you?” he asked suspiciously.

Jonny was silent on the other end, for a moment Jude thought he’d hung up but then he heard Angie snickering and knew he hadn’t been that lucky.

“Well yes,” Jonny said slowly.

Jude rubbed at his forehead, he could feel a headache coming on. Between Ewan and his dramatic fits and Jonny and his entire fucked up relationship with Angie it was a wonder he was even still sane. Since all his best mates were most decidedly not.

“Any why is Angie with you?” Jude asked carefully. “I thought she was with Pitt.”

“Well…” Jonny dragged out the word, it was an old tactic that Jude was well aware of. He was buying time until he figured out what he wanted to say.

Except he didn’t say anything because he knew there was nothing he could say that would make Jude understand why he had taken up once again with the woman that he had once compared to a black widow spider.

“You know what, how ‘bout I give you until I get Ewan straightened away to figure out how you want to tell us about Angie.”

Jonny laughed, Jude knew that he hadn’t said anything particularly amusing so he figured that Angie had done something on the other end and he truly didn’t want to know what it was.

Ewan had really been the only one that could talk to Jonny about Angie, maybe once Jude figured out what was going on with Ewan, Ewan could figure out what was going on with Jonny.

“Right then, I’ll call you once I get there.”

The headache that had begun throbbing in his forehead when he’d been on the phone with Jonny was pounding like an insane marching band had killed its conductor and was just playing willy nilly all over.

It had been a thirteen hour flight with the most god awful layovers known to man and he’d almost decked the man behind the counter at the car rental booth.

But finally he’d been in front of the apartment that Ewan had rented. Hazy light through one window informing him that Ewan was indeed within.

He rubbed at his forehead, dug through his carry-on bag and found the bottle of aspirin. He cursed the top until he finally managed to get it off and took a swig of lukewarm water to down them.

Took a deep breath, palmed the car keys and stepped out of the car. Slipping the keys into his coat pocket.

Once he’d swore at Ewan for a few hours he’d either come back to the car and go to a hotel because they’d kill each other or he’d force Ewan to come get his bags as penance and move himself in.

Because obviously Ewan couldn’t be trusted to take care of himself.

He knocked on the door, each knock getting louder in quick succession.

Ewan should have gotten annoyed, pissed off. He should have flung the door open with curse words spewing from his lips and hands clenched into fists to keep from swinging.

He would have yelled out Ewan’s name, but this wasn’t his house in the middle of nowhere and Ewan’s neighbors would probably call the cops.

Finally he stopped knocking because his knuckles hurt and leaned against the railing.

When they’d been sharing the apartment they’d hidden a spare key for those times when they were both too trashed coming back from the pub to be bothered to dig in their own pockets for their key rings.

He ran a hand over the sill, cursing when he realized that it wasn’t there. Lifted up the mat just in case and finally glared at the potted fern and stuck his fingers in it.

Ewan was so hearing about this, the least he could have done was mail him and Jonny keys so they could get in if they needed to.

He found the little metal box, fingers twisting around it, he glared at the dirt on his fingers and decided that Ewan was so going to owe him for this.

He unlocked the door, gripping the key in his hand as he let the door close behind him.

The light was on in the living room, but there was no sound. No TV blaring, no music playing. Very unusual and Jude had sudden visions of a horror movie and Ewan murdered in his bathtub.

Which he needn’t have worried about it seemed because Ewan was laying on the couch in the living room.

Jude felt a tickle of fear, Ewan was a light sleeper. There was no way that he had slept through Jude knocking his door practically down.

“Ewan,” he touched Ewan’s shoulder. Faded black t-shirt, blanket laying over him but if he knew Ewan as well as he did, he’d be wearing boxer shorts… and socks, because his feet were always cold.

“Ewan,” he repeated with a bit more force. Finally noticing Ewan’s face, pale and sweaty. Breathing labored.

“Fuck,” Jude swore and dove for Ewan’s phone. His was in his carry-on and he’d have to go all the way out to his car and dig through his carryon bag to find it.

He punched in the numbers, listened to the calm voice on the other end that did absolutely nothing to calm him down.

“I need an ambulance. Now!”

Jude didn’t do well under stress like this; it was why he had Ewan after all.
