Hmm… Eh… see I had this story for an AU where I could indulge my two favorite pairings (is it possible to have more than one OTP?) In this story Justin made a simple wish, after a fight with JC he wished that he’d never called JC and asked him to join *NSYNC and the world changed from that and Justin got to live that life that he wished for.
Well that story… has seemingly turned into something else entirely.
Chapter 6
“Did you really think we would make it easy for you?” Megan repeated moving a few steps closer as Justin gaped at her.
“What? What the hell did you do to me?!”
“Me?” Megan gestured to herself. “I didn’t do anything to you.”
“Then…”
“You asked for this… you made a wish… and it was granted.”
“This is insane,” he ran trembling fingers through his hair, glaring at them then back at the woman before him.
“Not really,” she shrugged.
“You know I’ve seen this episode of Buffy,” he spat. “Twice. Where’s the pendant? I want to smash it so I can go home.”
“No pendant,” Megan raised her arms to her side, allowing Justin’s eyes to rake down her slim form.
“Then it’s a ring,” she waggled bare fingers at him. “Broach,” she arched her neck to show a bare collar. “Then it’s a fucking garter belt,” Justin decided taking a step forward.
“I’m not stripping naked so you can search me,” Megan grumbled taking a step back. “And you’re not stuck in an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, use your brain, I know you have one.”
“Then what the hell is going on… and don’t tell me again that I asked for this because I so would remember. I was talking to JC once second and the next I’m standing in Chris’ backyard defending my sanity.”
Megan stared at him for a moment, head cocking, eyes narrowing, lips pursing in concentration.
“I’m a Guardian.”
“What the hell does your band have to do with this?”
“You shouldn’t swear so much, JC doesn’t like it,” she chided gently.
“Yeah well JC’s not here is he?! He’s with fucking AJ, he’s staying with AJ. Now tell me the truth.”
“I already told you, I’m a Guardian…”
“I know what your band is; I’ve seen your concert… although I have to say I liked our version of No Strings better than yours.”
“Don’t be catty Justin, and as for the other it’s not only who I am it’s what I am.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Justin…”
“Look I don’t understand and to be honest I really don’t care,” he said tiredly, his head bowing as he kicked at the ground with the toe of one shoe. “I just want to go home, I just want my fucking life back, I want JC back.”
“Justin you need to understand…” Megan began softly.
“Send me home please,” he begged.
“Justin look at me.”
He closed his eyes, refusing. It was all a dream.
A horrible, disturbing dream and when he woke up he’d be home and he’d roll over and JC would kiss him and they’d be okay.
“Justin look at me,” Megan ordered.
He raised his head slowly, eyes welling with tears. Before him he saw Megan standing there, blue jeans, black t-shirt an expression of sympathy on her face.
And then he blinked.
And Megan changed. Snow-white wings billowing proudly behind her, white armor lining her chest and arms.
Blink.
Blue jeans, black t-shirt. Megan’s expression changing to one of rueful indulgence.
“Do you understand now?” she asked softly. “Do you see?”
“I… You’re…” Justin sputtered eyes wide
“Yes.”
“But… but…”
“You made a wish, in your heart you wanted it, you believed it.”
“But I’ve never seen you before.”
“You didn’t make the wish to me. I’m not your Guardian.”
“Then who…?” Justin’s eyes opened impossibly wider. “JC?! JC isn’t… you’re lying; this is all some big joke… Ashton’s doing that damn show again,” he decided whirling in a circle. Searching the shrubs the trees. “It was funny the first time but now he’s just being an ass… where’s he hiding the cameras?” He ignored the wings that faded in and out of view. Obviously they were some sort of blue-screen, FX special effect trick.
Maybe if he ignored them long enough they’d just vanish because they very obviously couldn’t be real and they were beginning to drive him a little insane.
“Justin you need to listen to me if you want to fix this.”
“No I don’t, because this isn’t real Megan. Pay attention.”
“This is very real. Your life here is very real and nothing is going to change that… your world doesn’t exist anymore,” she said sharply, Justin’s eyes over to meet hers.
“It doesn’t exist,” she repeated. “Not in the way that you remember it, it won’t ever exist again and you need to pay attention if you want to fix things.”
“But…”
“This isn’t a TV show and I’m not a demon Justin. You can’t destroy me and send yourself to anywhere but hell.”
“My world… doesn’t exist?” he asked, his voice small and trembling. “How is that possible? I remember…”
“Your wish was granted Justin, you made one and it was granted.”
“But I didn’t… I was just… and I was here and nothing makes sense anymore.”
“What do you remember Justin? Exactly.”
“JC and I were arguing.”
“Arguing?”
“We were fighting, I said some… I was pretty mean… He had me so angry, I couldn’t even look at him,” Justin said softly, his voice almost a whisper. Their eyes locked together he could swear he saw understanding dawning in hers.
“You weren’t looking at him?” she asked quietly.
“No… I turned away, I just… You don’t understand I was so mad. If I’d stayed looking at him I would have…”
“What did you say Justin?”
“I…” his eyes closed and words flooded his mind.
“You know sometimes I wish that I’d never called you.”
“I didn’t mean it,” Justin whispered. “I would never…”
“What else Justin?”
“What else? Isn’t that bad enough?”
“But that wasn’t everything, what else did you say?” Megan asked though Justin could tell from her expression that she already knew exactly what had been spoken. She was just doing this for his benefit. So he could understand the choice that he’d made.
He wondered if Nick had ever had her speak to him with underlying tone of steel.
“I…”
“Maybe we’d be able to make this work if we weren’t in the same band.”
The words floated in the air between them.
“Who did it? If it wasn’t you I mean?”
“Who do you think Justin?”
“No…”
“He’s always looked out for you, protected you to the best of his ability. He would lay down his life for you.”
“Please don’t,” he backed away a step.
“He’d change his world for you, his life… to give you what you wanted, what you thought you wanted.”
“I didn’t want this,” Justin whispered as Megan took a step toward him.
Her wings flickered in and out of view; and an image of what JC’s would look like flitted unbidden into Justin’s mind.
They’d be bright white, full, beautiful wings. Because everything about JC had always been beautiful. They’d flare proudly behind him because JC always wore everything proudly, whether it be flowered Capri pants or large snow-white wings. He’d wear the armor as proudly to.
He wondered insanely if they had to polish the armor themselves, and if so where exactly you bought the supplies for that. Was there a store or some sort of service that did that for them? Then banished that thought from his mind.
Because it couldn’t be true, any of it. It was impossible.
He’d known JC forever and a day, had been his lover for years and he’d never seen any sign of wings.
He was sure that he would have noticed something as obvious as that.
“To put things right you need to prove yourself right. You need to prove to him that you can make a relationship work without being in the same band, without tearing each other apart.”
“AJ…” Justin protested weakly.
“You’ll have to work around him. I’ll help you as much as I can, but you’re not my charge and I won’t interfere. I can’t interfere. I will tell you that JC will not leave AJ for you. He loves him just as much as he loves you. If you want JC back, you’ll have to work on AJ as well. They’re a package deal at this point.”
“I don’t think of AJ like that.”
“I’d learn to.”
“I don’t even like him.”
“I’d start.”
