Possession - Chapter 10

They had Dean up and moving around a week later.

That first day had been amusing as hell, with Amy enlisting Sam’s help to get Dean on his feet and then basically making him walk laps in the hallway. Dean muttering and grumbling under his breath every step of the way.

‘Christo’ had popped out of his mouth more then once, which caused smiles that were quickly hidden to form on Sam and Amy’s faces.

Dean had been concentrating on not falling on his face and had luckily missed them, or Lex was sure that he would have been grumbling about the two of them being sadists that took delight in torturing him.

Lex was amused, less amused when he showed up for his two AM visits to find Dean sound asleep.

“We didn’t even give him anything,” Amy had whispered apologetically. Lex sat with him anyway; there was no telling how long he would stay now that he was on his feet again.

Even before he’d been able to stand without assistance he’d been pushing to get back on the road, Lex knew that he was worried that the longer they waited the deeper to ground John Winchester would have gone. He’d had his own people searching for the father since shortly after he’d vanished but so far there’d only been rumblings of where he’d been and no concrete sightings.

Lana was still standoffish when Dean was around, which Lex made sure was often. Now that he was moving under his own volition he often joined Lex in the library before his evening laps with Sam. Lex made sure that Lana was there because the sooner he could get them interacting with each other the easier his life would be.

He wasn’t holding out high hopes though, Lana could ignore the fact that Dean even existed and Dean was taking his cues from her and not pressing, even though Lex could tell he wanted to.

He thought if he could get them to at least say one word to each other that it might break the dam wide open and things could start going back to some semblance of normal.

But then normal was highly overrated and when he came down to breakfast Dean and Sam were already there, sitting side by side, newspapers spread open in front of them and Lana sitting across from them biting her lip looking like she wanted to say something but wasn’t sure what it was.

He passed by Dean, drawing a hand across the back of his neck and Dean looked up at him with a vague expression that cleared into a smirk before Sam drew his attention back to the papers.

“Bobby gave us a lead on a garden gnome in Idaho,” Dean said, his way of keeping Lex in the loop. He’d taken to sharing stories that Lex half wanted to be exaggerated but knew from the way that Sam interjected his own comments weren’t. Lex’s coffee cup stopped at his lips and he wondered if chaining Dean in the cellar was a viable option or would just cause Sam to kill him.

“Dean thinks that it’s a bit tame, wants to find something a bit more exciting,” Sam was rolling his eyes, Lex knew.

“Hell Sammy, you could do a garden gnome asleep, Bobby could do it and save us the trip,” Dean muttered. “I just think that since I’m back on my feet we could at least find a werewolf or a wendigo, hell even a water pixie would be better then a garden gnome.”

“I just think that it would be nice to ease back into things and not have to take you to a hospital, because no matter what you think you’re still not a 100% and even though you’ve lost like 20 pounds I’m still not carrying your ass when you fall flat on your face,” Lex smirked as Dean glared at Sam.

“I’m not a girl Sammy, you’re not carrying my ass anywhere,” he growled.

Lex let his attention be drawn to Lana while the brothers grumbled good-naturedly at each other; she was sitting directly across from them which was unusual.

Normally she sat as far from Dean as she could manage and still be in the same room, but at the moment she was directly across from him; as if she had just realized that their time with Dean was growing short. Lex could have told her that weeks ago, but if he mentioned the word Dean in a sentence she would tune him out.

Her entire attention was focused on Dean now though. There was a muffin on her plate that she’d obviously been picking at for a while because it lay in a crumbled mess, and she still looked like at any moment she could say something, though Lex didn’t hold out any hope at this late date, especially considering that even if she were to say something there was no guarantee that Dean would be willing to listen to it.

It had been weeks and the silence between Dean and Lana had grown by leaps and bounds, Dean had given up on getting her to talk to him a week and a half back, by this point he wouldn’t even acknowledge her when he entered the room. Lex knew with certainty that when Dean and Sam leave that it wouldn’t be Lana who drew Dean back.

It would be him and he wasn’t certain if he was enough of a draw to make sure that Dean returned.

“Lex?” he looked up and found Dean staring at him with an arched brow and Sam smirking. Obviously he’d missed something that was his cue to join the conversation.

“Yes?” he arched a brow in return and Dean smirked at him, a mirror image of the one on Sam’s face and sometimes it was just so obvious that they were brothers.

“I asked if you were going to give us a car or are you going to trust us to find our own source of transportation?”

Lex relaxed back in his chair, he’d had a long discussion with Bobby and Sam about a suitable mode of transportation once they were ready to leave.

Bobby was working on getting the Impala back in one piece but even with Lex’s help and contacts he was having trouble finding parts for it. Lex had almost bought a new one at least five times just to save them the effort; he would have if Bobby hadn’t sworn that Dean would know the difference.

Barring a miracle of some sort the Impala was definitely not going to be ready when Dean and Sam left, especially since Lex got the impression that they might be hitting the road after breakfast was done.

“I had some thoughts, but seeing as how there is a time constraint and I can’t see you parking any car that is worth more the $20 thousand outside some of those motels that Sam tells me you frequent…”

“You’re not giving us a Camry or a Neon or something are you? Because I have to draw the line somewhere and…”

“Relax. I got you something nice and reliable,” Lex smirked at the horror on Dean’s face at the word reliable.

Sometimes it was just too easy.

******************************************************************************

Lex was, predictably enough (which Dean would never utter to him, ever), in his office when Dean decided to seek him out.

It was well past time to be back on the road, Sam actually pulling out the papers that morning to scour over breakfast had been a sure sign.

“What can I help you with this morning Dean,” there was a leer in that voice, though Lex never once looked up and made eye contact.

Dean glanced around the office, dropped into the chair in front of the desk.

“Were you serious about the wheels? Because Sam wants to get on the road before dads trail gets to much closer and…”

Lex looked up, smirked at him and reached into his desk. Tossing the yellow envelope that he pulled out of the top drawer at him.

Dean glanced at it and back at Lex, raising an eyebrow which Lex matched with a slouch and crossed arms.

He shrugged finally and dumped the contents onto the desk.

Keys, a wallet, a cell phone, paper… he looked back at Lex.

“Dean Winchester is once more legally alive. You had a twin brother who went crazy and killed a bunch of people. There’s some cash in the wallet, two credit cards. Try not to max them out. The car is reliable, sorry. But at least it’s black,” Lex said softly. Dean flipped the wallet open and found his picture staring back at him.

“I expect a call at least once a week to let me know that you’re alive, both the numbers to my direct line and my cell are programmed into the memory.”

“Lex…” he stopped because he couldn’t think of what to say. What was the appropriate response to someone giving your life back to you?

His chest hurt and he pressed a hand to his heart and wondered if this was what a breaking heart felt like… it hadn’t hurt this much to leave Cassie. It hadn’t hurt this much when Lana turned her back on him.

He pushed himself to his feet, walked around the desk and knelt in front of Lex. Let him stroke gentle fingers down his cheek, across his lips. He closed his eyes and smiled when he felt the soft press of Lex’s lips against his.

His lips separated on a sigh and allowed Lex entrance; he let Lex control the kiss, somewhat like he wanted Lex to control him.

He wanted Lex to tell him to never leave, wanted him to order him to stay. If there hadn’t been Sam Dean might even have been able to do that, but Sam would have a fit and even Dean was itching to get back out there.

To do the one thing that he was good at; to find dad once more and maybe, finally, put an end to the fight so there might be a possibly that he could walk back into this house and stay.

Lex pulled back first, fingers on his chin and Dean opened his eyes slowly. Staring at him and he didn’t think it was his imagination that Lex looked sad.

“If you need anything, you call me,” Lex smiled at him, a pale imitation of smiles that he’d graced Dean with in the past weeks. “I’ll be there.”

******************************************************************************

They left two days later. Packing bags into the car at first light and Lex was standing on the front steps as they get everything inside.

Sam stood by the drivers’ door, arms braced on the roof while he watched Dean walk back up to him. It was the only privacy he could give them in the middle of the driveway.

The two men stood inches apart, talking too quietly for Sam to make out the words. A glance up and he saw curtains move, saw Lana staring down at them. He felt almost sorry for her, she’d tried over the last two days to talk to Dean and Dean hadn’t listened.

Hadn’t said a word to her, because Lana would approach him but could never get a word out of her mouth.

Maybe when they returned she’d see what she’d lost.

Maybe.

For now, Dean was leaning into Lex. Arms wrapped around each other and he thought he might have missed the kiss which was a good thing, because seeing his big brother kissing another guy was something that he really could have lived without.

But the hug was okay, and Sam wished that it was all over so he could tell Dean to stay, could tell him that it was okay that Lex was a guy and Lana was an idiot but would eventually come to her senses.

Dean’s face was open and raw, Sam had never seen that look on his brothers face before.

He probably wouldn’t see it again until they returned here and were forced to leave once again.

“We ready?” Sam asked. He had to. If Dean told him he wasn’t good to go, Sam would pull the bags out of the car and move them back into the house and wait.

Dean looked back over at where Lex stood on the front steps, hands behind his back. Sam watched him glance up at the window where Lana was standing. Sam thought she might be crying but he couldn’t be sure from the distance.

He raised his hand, a silent goodbye and Sam wasn’t sure who it was for, then opened the passenger door and climbed inside. The door closing with a soft click. Sam nodded at Lex and climbed in himself.

Started the car. Turned the radio up.

In the passenger seat Dean already had his sunglasses on and was slouched down as far as he could.

“I told him we might try to come back through in a couple of weeks. Try not to get us in another accident Sammy.”

“Hey that last one, totally not my fault. Demon possessed truck driver,” Sam rolled his eyes, put the car in gear and navigated his way down the road slowly. Lex stayed on the front steps until Sam couldn’t see him anymore.

“Do they even have insurance to cover that?”

“If they don’t they should, how many times accidents has your car been in?”

Dean glanced over at him and even without the removal of the sunglasses Sam knew that there was an arched brow to match the smirk.

“And surprisingly enough for all the accidents my baby was in you were driving… do you think that’s a sign that maybe I shouldn’t let you drive anymore…”

Sam smiled.

Epilogue

He had the cell phone in his hand, it had been seven days and he had no doubt that if he didn’t make the required first phone call within the next 32 minutes by the time the seventh day rolled into the eighth Lex would be knocking on their hotel room door.

It wasn’t like he was hiding where they were; he’d used one of the cards that Lex had given him. They hadn’t had to go under cover to ask questions so he’d used his real name as well.

Lex knew where they were, had probably known where they were since the moment they checked into the motel.

Actually he’d probably known where they were the minute they’d stopped within the city limits to get gas.

“Are you going to call him?” Sam was laying on one of the beds, remote in his hand and he was clicking by channels so fast that Dean knew there was no way that he could tell what was on.

He stared at the phone again.

He’d promised, he knew that. Not with actual words, but by accepting the cards and the money and the phone and Dean Winchester being a living person once more.

He stood suddenly, phone gripped tightly.

“I’m going to get some fresh air.”

“Tell Lex I said hi,” Sam said. Dean didn’t need to turn to see the smirk and knowing eyes on Sammy’s face. He could hear him in his voice and that was kind of disturbing.

He closed the door behind him, leaned against the wall. Stared at the phone again.

He punched in the number manually, a test. Lex would have programmed his number into the phone first. But if Dean didn’t know it then maybe this was all some horrible mistake and…

“Cutting it kind of close aren’t we?” Lex’s voice on the other end, smooth and pleased.

He closed his eyes and wondered if he could kick Sammy out of the room. That voice was just made for phone sex and next time he knew he was calling in he would have to get separate rooms and try that out.

“I told you that I’d call,” he grumbled.

“Actually you never agreed to that one way or another,” Lex sounded amused. Probably in his office, feet up on his desk.

“Where are you?”

“I’m in my office, if your next question is going to be what am I wearing I should warn you that I might need to move to a more suitable venue.”

“We’re not having phone sex,” Dean hissed. Softly so no one would hear.

“We’re not?” Lex sounded disappointed. Hell Dean felt disappointed; he’d not had sex in over a week. He was getting mighty tired of jerking off in the bathroom. Sam would probably roll his eyes at him because his little brother was working on a few months for his dry spell.

“I’m not inside the room, the car windows aren’t tinted and I’m not that much of an exhibitionist.”

“Hmm, maybe next time then.”

Dean smiled, Lex still sounded disappointed. Which pleased him because it meant that the other man hadn’t come to his senses that minute that he’d left Smallville with Sam.

“So tell me about your hunt, did it go okay?”

“It was two garden gnomes, if the guy living in the house hadn’t been such a pansy he could probably have dealt with them himself,” Dean grumbled. It was a wasted trip and as much as he’d wanted to get back on the round, start tracking his dad all over again Sam could have done better then garden gnomes as Dean’s first hunt back in the game.

“I’ve got a few leads for you to check out; a man matching your father’s description was spotted in New York City two days ago.”

“You don’t have to do this, help us.”

“As far as I’m concerned I’m helping myself. The sooner you find your father, the sooner you kill this demon thing and the sooner that you’ll come home. And stay.”

Dean tried to clear his throat around the lump that had suddenly popped up.

“You want me to live with you when this is done?”

“Did I not make that abundantly clear before you left? I’ll have to make sure that I do that when you come through here again.”

“Lex…”

“Of course I also hope that you and Lana will have put aside your differences by then as well.”

“She hates me.”

“She doesn’t hate you, she just doesn’t know you and the next time that you’re here I’m contemplating locking the two of you in the same room with no exits so that she can get to know you. I’ll have to strip search you both before you go in there to make sure that there are no weapons so that both of you come out alive, but I don’t have a problem with that.”

“Is that supposed to be incentive to come back to Smallville? Because really it’s just making me want to stay away,” Dean muttered.

“She’s been asking about you, asking me if I’ve heard from you. Asking me how you are, if you’re healing well, if you’re eating enough.”

“Lex…”

“I’ll just leave it at that. Now…”

“I should go back in, don’t want to use up all my minutes on our first phone call.”

“Do you really think I would give you a phone with limited minutes?” Lex scoffed. “But I’ll let you go, you’ll call me again soon and I mean before the seven days is getting ready to expire.”

“Lex,” I love you, I miss you. He couldn’t say any of that. Lex would call him a girl and for sure someone would overhear.

Like Sam.

“I talk to you soon,” and his voice Dean could hear the words back. I love you, I miss you, be safe, be well.

“Bye.”

He held the phone to his side and breathed. Watched the teenagers in the park across the street laughing and being kids. He couldn’t remember ever being that young, that carefree.

He pushed the door open, let it close behind him, Sam was still on the bed. Eyes on the TV but Dean could feel his brothers entire focus centered on him.

“How’s Lex?”

“He’s good,” he sat on the bed, put the phone on the stand between the beds. Stared at the wall. “He said that Lana’s been asking about me.”

Sam looked over at him, eyes wide and knowing. Sam had probably known that Lana needed time, Lex had known that. Christ Clark probably could have figured it out but somewhere Dean was missing that thing that helped him decipher the female subtext and it pissed him off a little.

“We can go back… you know, if you want to.”

Dean stared at his hands.

“I want…” Dean shook his head. Because what he wanted didn’t matter. They had a mission, a job, a fight. And he couldn’t go back to Smallville until that was over with. He wouldn’t endanger Lex and Lana that way.

He couldn’t. They were his future, the future that he couldn’t have until it was done.

“We’ve got things to do, when we’re done,” he took a deep breath. “If they still want me when that’s done then I’ll go back. But until then…”

They had a job to do, a dad to find, a demon to kill.

Then they could have their lives back.

I am VERY pleased with how everything turned out. <3 With Lex, everything should be a bit more easier for them. I also liked Lex's idea to lock Lana and Dean up in the same room, STRIPPED. xD

Just wondering, will there be more of this? Or is this just finished? -adds to memories-

ok truth to be told. I loved this. I love this. But Sam and Dean (no I don't mean Wincest here), their connection is insurmountable man. It's like Dean is not as obsessed as protecting his brother and Sam is so happy for his brother and I get that this is a healthy relationship for the Winchester bros but dammit, I want that unhealthy bond. The I can't live without you and etc. (Again I don't mean Wincest). Though I have to say your Lex is spot on. Lex is always feral and possessive in my mind.
