Possession - Part 1

May 2005

The pendant settled against his skin, chain heavy and cold around his neck and he screamed.

They screamed.

Dean and Jason, Jason and Dean.

Then they fell silent and he was alone in his mind for the first time in over a year. He shuddered and felt hands against his body, holding him down. Holding him still.

His lungs hurt, his throat was raw, his body ached.

It hurt to breathe.

“That’s it, slow and easy,” low voice, southern twang. Achingly familiar in a way that nothing had been for Dean in a while.

It took him three tries to get the name out.

“Bobby.”

“You’re all right now son, just relax,” the hands on his body relaxed and he pried his eyes open.

Bobby, looking worn and tired. Jimmy Campbell down by his legs and over by the door being held back by Caleb was his dad. Rumsfeld at his feet.

Up on the ceiling something was painted into the wood but he couldn’t make bleary eyes focus on it.

“You okay?” his dad’s voice was gruff and so familiar that he felt tears prick behind his eyes before he got himself under control.

He wasn’t no sissy, prissy boy.

He wasn’t Jason Teague with his money and his clothes and his mother running his life like it was her own.

He was Dean Winchester and he recited his name to himself over and over again.

Dean Winchester, I am Dean Winchester… Dean, Dean, Dean.

He could feel Jason pushing at the edges of his mind, trying to find a way back in, but whatever they’d enchanted the pendant with kept him at bay.

Allowed Dean to think for himself.

He closed his eyes and let his head fall back on the floor, Bobby and Jimmy and Caleb and his dad talking around him and at him and he concentrated on breathing instead.

Let the voices wash over him while he wallowed in his anger and self-pity and his grief.

So close.

He’d been closer to having a real life as Jason Teague then he’d ever thought possible when he’d been Dean Winchester.

They probably thought him dead now, and maybe that was a good thing.

They’d go on with their lives, with each other, with Clark.

Not with him. Not with Jason either. Who he could feel fading away like so much dust.

It was ruined anyway, whatever possibilities there might have been before were no longer there.

Jason Teague was gone and Dean was certainly not him. Couldn’t pretend to be and wasn’t that just a kick in the ass. The one time he could have been someone else and he couldn’t do it.

Because if he did, if he went back... He would never leave and he couldn’t abandon dad like that, not since Sammy already had.

Besides the fact that Lana would definitely think that he’d betrayed her and Lex… well Lex had most likely just been waiting for proof that he was fucking them over the entire time anyway.

There were hands on his arms again and he hadn’t even realized that he’d stated shaking.

He opened his eyes and found his father staring down at him. John Winchester as inscrutable as Lex had been.

“I’m okay,” he whispered, willed his father and the others to believe it.

“I’m okay.”

May 2006

He hadn’t told Lana about the private detective because he’d called himself seven kinds of a fool before he’d done it and then still went ahead anyway.

But he had to know, they had to know. One way or another they would put the whole thing behind them.

There’d been no body found after all. And blood and tire tracks had indicated to the cops that Lex had bought off that a body might possibly have been taken from the scene.

He’d given him two months.

Two months to heal from the injuries before he’d expected to see Jason back in town full of fire and passion and hate for the death of his mother.

But there had been no whisper of activity.

None of Jason’s accounts (his own or the ones that Lex had set up for him) had been touched. No assets had been liquidated, none of the houses that Lex had known about had been lived in.

But every time he’d been close to calling the detective and telling him to close the case, to declare Jason as dead as his mother there’d be some whisper in the underground of someone looking like Jason, a picture popping up with startling resemblances and Lex would force the search anew.

The day that they found him Lana had been there, hovering over his shoulder as he worked and he’d stopped snapping at her to give him space because her idea of space had been to physically leave and then he’d have to go track her down and apologize even though he wasn’t at fault.

She was touching him when the phone rang, hand on his shoulder as she read over his shoulder.

“Yes?” his voice abrupt and sharp. Telling the caller to get right to the point or risk being hung up on.

“Mr. Luthor this is Mr. Cassidy,” Lex leaned back, rolled his shoulders, and prepared himself for the long litany of excuses as to why they hadn’t managed to find one lone man.

The next words stopped him dead and he thought he might have stopped breathing but he didn’t pass out so he was pretty sure that wasn’t the case.

“We found him.”

“What? Where?”

“At a hospital in Jefferson City, Missouri. There was a car accident as well as some other type of accident though the cops are keeping quite close lipped about it. He had no identification on him so he’s listed as a John Doe which I’m getting changed even as we speak. He’s not woken since he was admitted with two other males,” a rustle of paper. “John and Sam Winchester, it looks like father and son. John Winchester was shot in the leg, Sam Winchester had multiple lacerations and a broken cheekbone. Obviously there’d been some sort of altercation that Mr. Teague may or may not have been involved in with them prior to the car accident.”

Lex turned slowly, eyes meeting Lana’s and she stared at him in incomprehension so he didn’t want to know what kind of look he had on his face.

They’d found him, he was alive.

Lex was going to beat him within an inch of his life for every infraction before he allowed him back into their bed.

“We’ll be there, in a couple of hours.”

The one good thing about having money was that other people fell at your feet when you used it.

A private plane to Jefferson City, a limo waiting at the airport. Lex had already called in favors and when they returned to Smallville there would be a full medical staff awaiting Jason’s arrival. One of the spare bedrooms was being turned into a hospital suite, his own private physician and two nurses were just waiting for the call to descend.

Mark Cassidy was waiting at the front entrance to the hospital when the limo pulled open, darting forward to open the door before the driver even had the opportunity to fully stop.

“How is he?” Lana’s voice was breathless, her eyes were still red but she wasn’t crying any longer.

She was cool and collected in a way that she hadn’t been able to be on the plane when Lex had finally told her that Jason was hurt.

That instead of bringing home a live, breathing Jason to scream at, they might be bringing home a body for burial.

“He’s stable for now, his doctor is waiting to speak to you before you see him.”

“I want to see him first,” Lana insisted and her nails dug into Lex’s hand as she glared at him.

“We’ll talk to his doctor first, what’s his name?”

Beside him Lana huffed, if they hadn’t been in public she would probably have stomped her foot and possibly pouted.

Cassidy led them past the admitting desk, nodding to the nurse on duty. Past the two cops that were standing at the desk watching them with interest as they passed.

“Munson. She’s voicing some concern about moving him from the hospital.”

Lex had made known before they’d even left Smallville that Jason would be returning with them. He should have known that someone would try to make such a simple task difficult.

“What exactly is her concern?” Lex asked mildly as they were led into a small well-lit office. The older woman sitting behind the desk stood as they entered.

“My concern? We still don’t know what happened to Mr. Teague. Don’t have any idea what caused the injuries that were not caused by the car accident.”

She indicated for them to sit and Lex folded himself gracefully into a chair, Lana perching into the one next to him while Cassidy remained by the door.

“Jason was probably in a fight,” Lex stated. “Easily explainable. His temper has a short fuse, he irritated somebody and they retaliated.”

“Mr. Luthor,” Dr. Munson drew a deep breath. “Look, the injuries that Mr. Teague sustained, we can’t explain them. When the ambulance brought him in his body was failing, we lost him twice from the blood loss while we were trying to stitch his body back up. We just barely got him back the last time, we’ve had him on oxygen and we’ve had nurses in his room round the clock to make sure we don’t lose him again. I appreciate that you want to take him home with you but he’s in no shape to be moved. He hasn’t even regained consciousness since he was brought in and there’s a chance he might not ever.”

“Dr. Munson, I understand that you think you’re looking out for Jason’s best interests. But we are as well, I have Jason’s medical power of attorney, we’ll be moving him tonight, or by the latest tomorrow morning. I suggest that you make sure that the team that comes to do that have every last bit of information that they need to know for his continued health.” Lex stopped, stood.

He was done with the conversation and now he wanted to see Jason, to make sure that this wasn’t a wasted trip after all.

“We’d like to see Jason now,” he raised a brow and waited expectantly. Dr. Munson growled under her breath and Lex smiled his most charming smile. Beside him he could feel Lana trembling in anticipation.

Maybe a little fear. They had the third member of their triad back but at what cost? And they still had no idea what kind of shape he was in.

They might have just found him only to lose him again.

******************************************************************************

The door was harmless but Lana still stared at it like it was going to sprout wings and launch itself at her. Lex rolled his eyes and pushed the door open, a look at Cassidy indicated that he would remain outside the door and Lex put a hand on Lana’s back to usher her in.

And stopped.

The door closing softly behind him and he heard Lana whimper beside him. Thought he might have made the same sound himself but he couldn’t be sure.

The sound of pounding in his ears and he could only stare at the body lying so quietly on the bed.

Jason had never laid that quietly, always tossing and turning and normally Lex would have to pin him to the bed in order to keep him still for any length of time.

“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,” Lana was whispering beside him and Lex echoed her sentiments.

There was a thin line of stitches across his temple, his face pale and lax, an oxygen mask over his mouth. An IV at the back of his left hand.

The door pushed open behind them and neither Lex nor Lana moved. A nurse moved around them, a plastic bin in her hands.

“You must be Mr. Luthor and Miss Lang; Mr. Cassidy said that you’d probably show up today,” the nurse looked between them and the bed. “I need to change his bandages.”

Lana made a choked sound, pressed a hand to her mouth and fled the room. Lex wished that he could follow her, he didn’t want this to be something that he remembered in conjunction with Jason’s name.

It just seemed wrong on so many levels, because Jason should be furious and screaming. He shouldn’t be lying in a hospital bed, unconscious, while someone else took care of him.

The nurse shrugged when Lex didn’t follow Lana out. Pulling the sheet and blanket down from where they’d been tucked firmly around Jason’s chest. The hospital gown that Jason was clothed in opened in the front and when the nurse opened it he could see why.

Bandages wrapped across the front of Jason’s chest, blood just starting to dot through them and he must have made a sound because she looked up at him.

“He shouldn’t have any scars,” she said almost conversationally as she gently peeled them away. Her movements were gentle and confident and she placed the ones she’d removed from Jason into a small plastic bag before starting to wipe his chest down.

“It’s odd though, the wounds. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to them, and the police haven’t been able to figure out what exactly caused them.”

She looked up at him and smiled. “Don’t tell them I told you that.”

He made an attempt to smile back at her and it seemed to be enough because she bent back to her task. Taping new bandages in place.

“Has anyone besides us been in to see him since he was admitted?” Lex asked, his voice sounded rough and gravely.

“The Winchester boy wanted to see him before they moved him and his daddy Upstate. He was still in the ICU then and without knowing how exactly the Winchester’s had been involved in your Mr. Teague’s injuries Mr. Cassidy made sure Dr. Munson wouldn’t allow it. They’ll probably try again now that he’s out of the ICU though, once they’re released themselves of course.”

Lex sneered, because until he was sure that John and Sam Winchester didn’t have anything to do with Jason laying in that bed looking a step away from death they weren’t getting anywhere near him.

Jason was in no shape to take care of himself. Besides the fact that Lex had that little piece of paper that said that he could make whatever decisions Jason couldn’t and as long as no one looked to closely at it and questioned its legitimacy… well Lex didn’t have a problem lying to get what he wanted.
