Measures of Insanity – Part 4

Jude paced outside the room, the door was closed and he’d been told in no uncertain terms that he should not go in until the doctor told him it was okay.

He ran a hand over his face and glanced at his watch.

11:30.

The doctor had been with Ewan for over an hour and a half, had walked in at 10:00 with a psychiatrist in tow and banned Jude and Jonny from the room.

Between the two of them they would determine how much Ewan remembered, what he didn’t and if the memory loss was too extensive whether or not it was safe to discharge him from the hospital or if they should begin looking for a private care facility.

Jude already had a nurse set up to help them out at Ewan’s flat, because he’d already decided that they would send Ewan into a home over his dead body and since Eve wasn’t there to kill him he thought he was pretty safe there.

Besides that fact that the house that Ewan was staying in had four bedrooms not counting the one that Ewan had obviously claimed as his own and it would be a shame to let all that space to go to waste.

Angie had begged off returning to the hospital with them that morning and was instead making phone calls to get furniture for the other four.

One had been claimed by Jude (the one closest to Ewan and there’d been a bit of a fight with Jonny over that) and he was sure that Angie was going to decorate it in pinks and pastels just to get revenge on Jonny’s behalf.

Jude had only been thinking of Ewan though, because he knew that Ewan certainly wouldn’t want to be listening to Jonny and Angie have sex while he was recovering.

So Jude had got the one closest to Ewan, Jonny and Angie had taken the one furthest down the hall and Angie had smirked as she told Jude that she would put Hayden right across from Jude and Ewan’s girls’ right across from him.

‘So that Ewan would have all his favorite people closest’ she’d said brightly, with a tone that Jude took exception to and he’d been proud of himself for not killing her even though he’d only not because Jonny had given him that look that told him if he raised a hand he might find himself nailed to the roof one morning when he woke up.

“Why don’t you sit down,” Jonny flipped through the magazine in his hands though he wasn’t fooling Jude at all. Every few seconds he would glance up and eye the door like if he looked hard enough he could see through it.

“I’m fine,” Jude muttered. He shoved his hands in his pockets and scowled.

What the hell was taking them so long?

Jonny shrugged, obviously he’d expected no less, as he should. Jonny had been his friend long enough to know that in times of high stress Jude could be a bit high strung.

Ewan had told him once, minutes before he’d married Sadie actually, that he could almost but not quite see the nervous energy exuding from every pore.

Jude sighed and leaned against the wall, staring at the door.

“How long does it take to flash a few pictures and ask who is this?” he finally asked, exasperation in every syllable.

“They’re just making sure they cover all their bases,” Jonny closed the magazine that he hadn’t been looking at anyway and tossed it in the chair beside him that Jude had refused to sit in. “They don’t want Ewan to sue them later because they’d not been thorough enough. Besides you don’t want them to release him if he truly needs to stay here, do you?”

“Ewan won’t want to stay here, he hates hospitals,” Jude stated decisively. “Besides I hired a nice nurse to come in and help out.”

“You’re not going to sleep with her are you?” Jonny rubbed his fingers against his jeans.

Jude scowled. He was never going to live that down. Though if Ewan had to forget anything Jude would rather he forget the whole ‘Jude sleeping with the nanny debacle’.

“She’s the same age as Ewan’s girls’ nanny.”

“You probably shouldn’t sleep with her either,” Jonny flashed him a smile just as the door opened.

The psychiatrist exited first, nodding at them as he walked past. He didn’t look concerned so Jude didn’t attack him for walking right past them without saying a word.

Ewan’s doctor was next; closing the door behind him and Jude just barely got a look at Ewan lying in the bed with a bemused expression on his face as the door closed.

Jonny stood, shoulders touching and Jude took a deep breath, felt Jonny do the same as the doctor looked at his clipboard.

“Well there is a bit of memory loss,” the doctor said quietly. Jonny jerked and Jude wrapped his arms around himself to keep from shivering.

“Not much, nothing that concerns us overly. Once he eats and we get the results back from the latest set of blood tests we’ll most likely release him.”

“Just like that?” Jonny asked with a bit of surprise in his voice.

The doctor smiled. “I don’t think we could keep him here for much past that. He doesn’t appear to like hospitals and it would be stressful for him to remain here for an extended period of time.”

“I’ve hired a nurse,” Jude stated.

“He won’t need one, he can take care of his own needs, although we will want him to speak to a psychiatrist for a while until things either come back or settle down.”

Jude nodded and he knew Jonny was doing the same next to him.

“Can we see him now?” Jude asked.

“Of course. I’m going to have something sent up for him to eat.” The doctor smiled reassuringly at them before he turned and walked away. Jude was unsurprised that it didn’t make him feel any more reassured.

Only Ewan smiling and knowing him would probably do that.

“Should we go see him?” Jonny asked, they turned to look at the closed door.

“Don’t you want to call the boy and give him an update?” Jude grumbled.

Jonny elbowed him and Jude scowled at him as he rubbed at his side. Jonny had bony, sharp elbows, how could he have forgotten that.

You are a jealous prat. Do you know that?” Jonny eyed him with a speculative expression that had Jude a bit worried. That was Jonny’s patented ‘I know something that you don’t know but probably should know’ expression. It didn’t bode well for Jude.

The last time that Jude had seen that expression he’d had sex with two of his best friends and couldn’t meet their eyes for at least six months.

It had taken him marrying Sadie and Ewan settling with Eve and Jonny going on the never-ending merry-go-round with Angie before he’d been able to put it somewhere behind him.

The fact that he’d wanted it to happen again (and again and again and again and maybe that was why he disliked the boy so much because he’d seen that look in Ewan’s eyes once and now Ewan looked at the boy like that while he called Jude his best mate) was obviously something that only he wanted.

And no he wasn’t the least bit bitter about that, because he knew that the fact that it wouldn’t was partly his fault.

Ewan had made overtures, all the way up until the time that Jude had gotten Sadie pregnant and then the overtures had ended and they were ‘just friends’ once more.

“I just thought…”

“I’m going to go see Ewan, you are going to come with me and you are not going to hover over him no matter how much you want to.”

Jude scowled, Jonny smirked at him. It was Angelina’s smirk and Jude knew that it was a bad idea to let Jonny and Angie have alone time. Jonny picked up all her bad habits (of which Jude had an alphabetized and laminated list in his bag) and when they split (as they inevitably would) Jude and Ewan would have to break him of all of them all over again.

And possibly put him in therapy. They’d wanted to the last time but Jonny would have none of that.

“You are not going to fluff his pillows or sit on the edge of his bed and hold his hand. You could probably kiss him if you want, Ewan would probably enjoy that.”

Jonny allowed the smirk to morph into an enigmatic smile and then walked into Ewan’s room. Leaving Jude in the hallway staring at the door.

Because had Jonny just told him that Ewan wouldn’t mind it if Jude kissed him?

Jude took another deep breath and braced himself.

With his luck that fact would have been the one thing that Ewan forgot.

Though he’d probably remember the Boy and Jude was frowning as he entered the room.

Obi-Wan found this all vastly amusing for simply one reason. At least his counterpart, unlike himself, didn’t appear to have any enemies that were focused on drugging and kidnapping him.

It sort of made up for the fact that Ewan didn’t appear to have a very strong connection to the Force here.

Jonny stepped into the room first, Jude following moments later and Jonny looked amused and Jude looked confused and both expressions were extremely worrying to him.

“So can I leave yet?” he modeled his voice to as closely as he could remember hearing Ewan speak and eyed them both expectantly. He didn’t like Healers in general in his own universe, and he certainly didn’t like these Healers who took it upon themselves to touch him without once asking if it was okay.

Jonny perched on the corner of his bed and smiled down at him. Obi-Wan raised a brow and watched as Jude flopped down in a chair.

“We’re just waiting for your doctors to give the all clear,” Jude said. He still looked confused by something and Obi-Wan tilted his head and studied him. Calling upon the miniscule amount of the Force that he had access to.

“Plus they want to feed you,” Jonny patted his leg and Obi-Wan turned his attention to him.

“The food here leaves something to be desired,” Obi-Wan stated. “I would rather not eat it again if I have any choice.”

“Don’t think they’re giving you much choice in the matter,” Jonny smiled at him, Jude shot him a look that was full of commiseration.

“You eat, and Jude and I will try to scare you up something to wear. I think the nurses in the Emergency Room got a bit overzealous and cut off your clothes when they brought you in.”

“Your boxers are probably garnering someone a pretty penny on eBay right now,” Jude said morosely.

“Why would anyone want to purchase my undergarments?” Obi-Wan asked bewilderedly.

Both Jude and Jonny stared at him as if he’d grown an extra arm, he very resolutely didn’t look down to see if that had happened because he was in an alternate universe and things like that might actually happen here.

Then a Healer came in with a tray of inedible food and that was the end of the conversation.
