AU – Obi-Wan Fic – Part 5

Obi-Wan snapped straight up in bed, heart hammering so loudly that he was sure that Anakin and Qui-Gon could probably hear it.

Except they weren’t inside to hear it and Obi-Wan hadn’t been woken by a nightmare as was normal, he’d been woken by the sounds of gunfire.

Old guns, with their loud cracking sound, not the new clean, high-pitched sounds of a blaster.

Raiders.

Only raiders used the old guns, preferring the damage and pain they inflicted instead of the instant death that the blasters afforded. They weren’t into granting mercy, they liked to hear their opponents scream in agony.

Not that Obi-Wan had first hand knowledge of that. For years the Raiders had been a myth, a legend. Every few years someone would see something, or hear something or there would be an attack on an outpost and it would be blamed on Raiders.

They were easy targets to blame. Though most people didn’t believe they existed. If he survived the night he would have a nice story to tell the next time he went into town.

He haphazardly tossed on clothes, his own blaster he grabbed from under his pillow. He preferred the blaster, it was easier to use and no time had to be wasted by loading and reloading as shells were wasted.

There was no sign that either Anakin or Qui-Gon had come back inside the house. They’d gone back to their ship, Anakin seemed intent on fixing it as soon as possible and Qui-Gon was doing everything within his power to assist him, almost as soon as dinner was finished.

In fact Obi-Wan was quite sure that if Anakin’d had his way he would have eaten while he continued his repairs on the ship.

He moved swiftly through the house, the battle sounded as if it was centered around the barn where they had hidden the Jedi’s ship. So he went out the front door.

Creeping slowly around the back. He could see Anakin and Qui-Gon protecting their ship.

Deflecting bullets with their lightsabers but not moving or allowing the raiders to move any closer.

He noticed one of them moving around the side, hidden in the shadows and Anakin hadn’t noticed him yet.

“Anakin,” he shouted, blaster drawn he darted forward. Putting himself between the younger man and the raider that was even now aiming and shooting.

He heard the shot, felt his body jerk in response but continued moving forward. Stumbling and falling, catching a glimpse of Anakin’s horrified expression right before he collapsed face first into the dirt.

He panted quietly, trying to work around the pain and then tried to roll onto his back so he wasn’t suffocating on his own dirt.

He made it as far as his side, Anakin, he noticed, was still frozen in the same spot, same horrified expression. His side felt like it was on fire and he touched a hand to the place where it was centered.

It surprised him somehow to see blood on his fingertips. And he didn’t know why since he’d known that he’d been shot.

But it was rather a lot of blood and he was used to seeing it on other people, people that he was helping, not himself. Because he couldn’t heal himself.

And he didn’t know of another Healer in the immediate vicinity that could treat this sort of wound.

He wondered if this was what Anakin’s vision had been about. And if it had, he wondered if he had survived by going with them, or if he had still died.

***************************************************************

It was just like his vision, Obi-Wan darting between him and the big man with a gun that he had just noticed, the shot ringing out and Obi-Wan falling to his to his feet, bleeding.

Staring at the blood on his hand as if he’d never seen such a thing before and Anakin was frozen to the spot. Around him shots still rang out, and his lightsaber moved of its own volition to block them.

“Get him on the ship,” Qui-Gon yelled and his former Masters voice spurred him into movement.

If they moved fast enough, if they were quick enough they would be able to get Obi-Wan help, he would survive.

His vision had told him so.

The raider wasn’t moving, just staring down at Obi-Wan like he couldn’t believe what had happened and while Anakin wondered why he wasn’t shooting he also wasn’t taking it for granted.

He deactivated his lightsaber, darted forward, scooped Obi-Wan into his arms all in one smooth motion, the other man crying out in pain and that sound seemed to unfreeze the raider and he began shooting again.

Qui-Gon was in front of him deflecting the shots, behind him the entire way onto the ship and Anakin ran ahead.

The ship wasn’t that big, just the cockpit, a small sleeping area and a small kitchen area. Anakin took Obi-Wan with him into the cockpit, settling him into the seat that Qui-Gon would normally sit in and flipped a switch and punched a series of buttons to activate the shield.

“Anakin go!” he heard Qui-Gon yell and he retracted the ramp and closed the outer door and prayed that Qui-Gon had strapped himself in somewhere because this was going to be the bumpiest takeoff that he’d ever done.

He felt like he should apologize but a glance over at Obi-Wan told him that would be wasted breath.

Obi-Wan was unconscious, slumped in the seat, blood soaking through the thin gray shirt that he must have worn to bed and Anakin wanted to go to him.

Wanted to practice the meager amount of training that he had received in Healing, but he knew that Qui-Gon would be the best person to treat the wound. Just like Anakin was the best person to be flying the ship.

Qui-Gon appeared in the door and it was on the tip of his tongue to ask what had taken him so long, then he saw the small box in his hands and realized that Qui-Gon had stopped for the Med Kit.

Anakin punched in the coordinates needed for the lightspeed jump, held his breath before he pressed the sequence of codes that was needed to authorize it.

The moment of truth, Qui-Gon could patch Obi-Wan up enough to keep him alive until they reached Coruscant, but that would only matter if Anakin had fixed the ship.

If the ship wouldn’t make the jump then Obi-Wan would be dead before they could get there.

He pressed the keys and stared forward, felt the ship whine around him and then seemingly dart forward.

He released the breath and turned his attention to where Qui-Gon was peeling back Obi-Wan’s shirt.

Blood stained the other Jedi’s hands and Anakin knew enough to not bother Qui-Gon while he was focusing.

Obi-Wan’s eyes snapped open when Qui-Gon pressed on the wound with one of the small cleaning gauzes. A harsh indrawn breath and a groan.

He seemed dazed and confused, just stared at Anakin like he had no clue what was happening.

“It’s okay,” Qui-Gon’s voice was a soft murmur and Anakin didn’t need to reach out with any part of the Force to know that Qui-Gon was utilizing it in order to get the other man to relax.

Obi-Wan did so, eyes closing into slits as he stared out the windows of the cockpit.

Anakin wondered if Obi-Wan had ever been on a space ship or if this was his first time.

“I thought I told you that I would not leave under any circumstances,” Obi-Wan mumbled. Anakin leaned over Qui-Gon’s shoulder to touch his cheek.

“If we’d left you there you would have died,” he said quietly, Qui-Gon nodded his agreement to this fact.

“I…” Obi-Wan closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping.

“Master?” Anakin asked with alarm, eyes wide as he pushed on Obi-Wan’s shoulder to wake him again. Qui-Gon elbowed him in the knee and Anakin scowled.

“He’s simply out from the pain,” Qui-Gon finished taping the bacta lined gauze into place and then leaned back. He didn’t smooth Obi-Wan’s shirt back down, they would need to find another shirt for him to wear until they reached Coruscant.

Anakin thought that once they stripped the blood soaked one off that he might jettison it, just the coppery smell of the blood was making him slightly nauseous. That was one of many very good reasons why he left all the Medic duties up to Qui-Gon.

“If you look in the compartment over top of the cooler you’ll find a bag with some of Obi-Wan’s clothing in it,” Qui-Gon busied himself with disposing of the used pads, lifting Obi-Wan’s arms so that he could pull the shirt ever so gently from the still body.

Anakin was torn between staring in appreciation at the half-naked man in front of him and gaping at Qui-Gon in surprise.

“Well you said you had a vision after all,” Qui-Gon stated pushing himself to his feet. “It never hurts to be prepared for every eventuality.”

Anakin was slightly awestruck.

“Master I never realized you were that sneaky.”

***************************************************************

Obi-Wan woke when the ship jolted. His side ached and it didn’t matter if he rolled to the left or the right or remained flat on his back it hurt.

He closed his eyes and pressed a hand to his stomach, he gasped when it twinged under his fingers.

If he could focus, if he could…

A hand reached down to move his aside, when he opened his eyes he found Anakin staring down at him in concern. Qui-Gon right behind him.

“We’re just a few hours from Coruscant,” Anakin said, laying his hand over Obi-Wan’s. “Master Qui-Gon has been in contact with the Temple and there should be Healers waiting for us when we arrive.”

Obi-Wan closed his eyes.

“Master I never realized you were that sneaky.”

Lol, yes. Qui is a sneaky bastard. Pure awesomeness. I love this AU, ALL of the characters feel like themselves. And you're immaculate with dialouge, I must say. Every story I've read of yours has enthralling dialouge. Eager for the next chapter.

Yay! A new installment. I've been bogged down so much with work that it is always pleasant to find such a delightful fic. You're able to condense so much action without taking up scores of pages. I really admire that about your writing. And while SW isn't my usual fandom, I enjoy this immensely. Can't wait to read more!
