Not All Superheroes Wear Capes – Part 7

“What’s a Slayer?”

Buffy gnawed on her bottom lip and hazarded a glance at Lex.

Who unfortunately still looked as completely befuddled as he had last time she’d looked.

What was a Slayer, she wished she could remember the speech that Merrick had cornered her with, the abbreviated version that Giles had cornered her with before she’d cut him off and rolled her eyes and finished it for him.

She’d known all the words once, had them memorized and playing in an endless loop in her head when her parents had committed her for that 30 days that had never ended.

She’d forgotten them over time because everyone she met was either someone who already knew are someone who was a Slayer. It was somehow a novelty to run into someone who didn’t know.

But she wished she still had the words. She thought Lex might appreciate the words, appreciate the whole spiel from beginning to end.

“Buffy?” Lex’s expression was turning worried and Buffy knew she had to take the bull by the horns and just spit it all out.

“The Slayer…” she paused hoping that something would come to her, where was her inner Giles when she needed it? “She who hangs out in graveyards and kills vampires?” It sounded like a question and Lex still had the slightly befuddled look though it was slowly being replaced by something more confused.

She hoped that his first inclination wasn’t to institutionalize her.

“The Slayer…” he repeated the words and his eyes grew a bit hazy and dim reminding Buffy eerily of Giles when he was remembering something or trying to remember something that he’d already read.

“Lex are you okay?”

Lex’s voice was soft as he spoke and he stared at her as if he’d never seen her before, eyes still hazy and distant and it was kind of starting to freak Buffy out a little. “Into each generation, a Slayer is born. One girl, in all the world, a Chosen One. One born with the strength and skill to hunt the Vampires, to stop the spread of evil…”

“Yeah I’ve heard the speech before,” Buffy rolled her eyes.

“The Slayer is a myth, a legend,” he said his voice still soft.

“Do I look like a myth to you?” Buffy managed to keep the sarcasm from her voice, by reminding herself that this wasn’t Giles or Angel or Spike or any of the hundreds of girls who thought it was cool to be a Slayer but didn’t understand that it meant giving up the rest of your life and living by someone’s else’s rules, this was Lex and he wasn’t like the others.

He didn’t want her to be anything other than herself and by the expression on his face she was pretty sure that he’d not had the slightest inkling that there was anything different about her.

“You look real,” Lex confirmed and his face morphed from the confusion into something more like acceptance as he nodded, like he finally understood. “That would explain the healing then. I’d thought,” he shook his head as if clearing his thoughts and it was Buffy’s turn to be confused. “I guess it doesn’t matter what I thought does it?”

“Uh no?” and she only said it because it looked like Lex expected her to say it. What she really wanted to say was ‘what the Hell are you talking about? I’m the one who’s supposed to be incoherent with exhaustion’ or something like that anyway.

Lex stared at her a smile gracing his face, a hand raising to cup her cheek gently. “Still so pretty,” he murmured. Buffy blushed and felt like a stammering foolish fourteen year. If she’d been standing she would probably have swooned and Lex was enough of a gentleman that he probably would have caught her.

“You are so biased,” she muttered in return and she moved closer to him, his body emitting heat like a furnace and she wanted to wrap herself around him and sleep forever.

“Yes I am,” he pressed a soft kiss to her cheek and she smiled. “I should probably go offer your Mr. Giles somewhere to sleep shouldn’t I?”

“If he gets tired, which he won’t because he’s probably in old book heaven, he’ll curl up in a chair. Giles can pretty much sleep anywhere,” Buffy buried her face in his neck, wrapping her arms around him tightly and even when he shifted like he was going to move away she held him to her.

She wasn’t letting him go, never again was she letting someone that she wanted go.

Unless of course he told her that he was sleeping with someone else or that he was getting bit up by female vampires… then she would probably let him go.

And then she’d become a nun, or maybe not because even though she hadn’t had sex in a while that didn’t mean that she wasn’t planning on never having it ever again, so maybe she’d just devote herself entirely to her work.

Or become a lesbian, she’d missed the whole experimentation thing that was supposed to happen in college what with being the Slayer and Riley and her mom.

Deciding to swing for the other side had worked out okay for Willow if you ignored that fact that Tara had been murdered in front of her and Kennedy was a bit of a bitch who wanted Buffy’s job (which Buffy would gladly gift-wrap for her) and most likely her life in general (which she would give up over her dead body).

So maybe she would just make sure Lex was happy and never wanted to leave.

Maybe Willow knew a spell to help that happen. Because Buffy had never been very good at keeping men around.

When Buffy woke again she was alone.

She sat up as she sighed and hoped this wasn’t a sign of things to come.

A smile came unbidden to her lips when she spotted the folded purple piece of paper on the pillow that Lex’s head had slept on.

Her grin widened when she unfolded the paper. A heart, shaded with letters that could have been a ‘B’ and a ‘L’ or just the way that Lex had shaded the heart in. And a little stick figure holding a stake.

Giles could be right most of them time, sometimes people could surprise you, Angel showing up at the Prom. Spike turning to the good side.

Lex being accepting and sweet like she remembered him being and not being jaded and cynical like she’d thought he would be.

Of course he obviously still had something for the color purple. She’d have to ask him about that, there were other colors in the rainbow.

Great chapter - liked the flow of Buffy's thoughts. Very in-character. Can't wait for more.

Aww...they're so cute <3 I'm glad Lex seems to have taken it well, though of course we can't know for *sure* until we get a chap from his side of things...

Great job, can't wait for more :D
