Measures of Insanity – Part 5

Clara and Esther appeared with their nanny and a note from Eve a few hours after Jude had forced Ewan to have a lie down in his room.

He would have gone in with him but Jonny had halted him with a glare and a look and Angie had started laughing and then the phone rang and he’d wasted a good hour talking to the Boy trying to explain what exactly was going on.

He’d assured him that Ewan was fine and no he wasn’t dead, he didn’t care what E! News Daily was saying and no, he didn’t need to fly out early, Jonny was there with Angie and Jude had all the help he could stomach and then he’d contemplated throwing a temper tantrum and screaming that Ewan was his not the Boys and he so would have if Jonny hadn’t already been laughing at him and Angie hadn’t been watching him with an arched brow waiting for him to do exactly that.

Finally he’d just sighed, counted to ten in his head, then twenty, then thirty and then just gave up and told him that he’d explain it all when he got there and hung up while the Boy sputtered in his ear insisting that Jude tell him what the fuck was going on.

He could hope that the Boy would change his mind before the fifteenth and decide he wasn’t all that close to Ewan but his luck didn’t appear to be that good lately. Besides the fact that the Boy appeared to be firm in his resolve ‘to be there for Ewan in whatever manner he wants me there’ so Jude just sighed loudly again and Jonny rolled his eyes at him and Angie laughed some more.

He was going to have to learn how to share his friends and he’d never been very good at that.

“You’re going to have to call him Hayden when he gets here,” Jonny said mildly from his position at the table. Angie was perched on the counter behind him and smirking at him. He contemplated throwing one of the plastic fruit in the bowl in the middle of the table at her but she had a gleam on her eye that indicated that if he did so he would die a slow and painful death.

“What’s wrong with ‘the Boy’?” Jude grumbled.

“Besides the fact that it isn’t his name?” Jonny grinned. “You’ll only confuse Ewan, and you don’t want to confuse Ewan any more than he already is, do you?”

Jude conceded the point but only because Jonny was right and resolved to call the Boy Hayden once he arrived but not a moment sooner.

And then Clara and Esther were there. Bright, shining faces. Looking happy to see them and worried about their father.

“Where’s Maddox?” spouted from Clara’s lips and Angie hopped off the counter and kneeled before her. Running a gentle hand over her head and sometimes it surprised Jude that Angie was a parent because he’d thought her the least likely person to want to take on that role.

“He’s with his nanny, he’ll be here in the morning,” she said gently. Clara smiled and Esther clutched the doll in her arms tighter to her chest.

“I want to see daddy,” Esther said softly and Jude took her in his arms, hugging her tightly.

“Lets go see if he’s awake then, shall we?”

Ewan had children it seemed.

Two tiny little children and even though his mind knew that Clara was the same age that Anakin had been when he’d been made Obi-Wan’s padawan learner he didn’t think that Anakin had ever been that small and delicate.

He certainly didn’t remember him being that small.

Clara barely came to his hip and he was scared if he touched her that she would shatter into many tiny pieces. Also there was the distinct possibility that she would cry and he’d never handled crying females very well.

They made him nervous and he was inclined to give them whatever they wanted to make them stop which then served to make Anakin insist that he couldn’t go anywhere without a keeper.

He’d patted Clara’s head as she hugged him, trying to not be awkward about the fact that he was scared to touch her.

He’d been scared of Anakin when he’d been this small as well, or maybe not scared so much as unsure of how he was supposed to take care of this child that was for all intents and purposes now his.

His responsibility to feed and clean and care for, and while Anakin had turned out fairly well Obi-Wan thought that was in spite of the care that he’d offered instead of anything that he might have actively done.

And Esther, little Esther who seemed to be half the size of his leg who clambered into the lap of the man occupying her fathers’ body and demanded a story that Obi-Wan had never even heard of and it was just on the tip of his tongue to mention amnesia when Jude had rescued him.

Settling on the bed next to him. Clara against his hip and they’d laid there as Jude recited a story from memory about two princesses who traveled to a vast land and found a bottle with a man inside.

It was truly bizarre and he made a mental reminder to force Ewan to list out all those things that he was going to be required to do for his children that Jude may or may not know about.

Then made another mental note to wait until after Ewan had managed to extricate himself from the mess that he’d managed to get himself into.

All the years that Obi-Wan had been alive and he’d never once been kidnapped by two different sets of people within days of each other. He wondered if Ewan was just prone to that sort of thing and wondered how to go about carefully asking Jude whether or not Ewan made a habit of getting himself kidnapped.

Then he wondered where the girls had come from.

There was an older woman standing in the doorway, looking equal measures disapproving of the fact that the girls were laying on each side of him and he could feel that she was seconds away from yanking them away from their fathers’ sickroom.

“We’re fine here,” he said sternly, glaring a bit for good measure. Jude glanced over with some small amount of confusion and he wondered if his voice had slipped and he sounded himself.

The woman wilted under the strength of his glare and with an upraised nose and a loud ‘hmpph, well I never’ she stalked away.

The girls giggled, Esther laying her head on his arm and staring up at him like he’d just performed an amazing trick and Clara eyed him with some awe and did he let that harridan just run roughshod over his children and himself?

He would have to have strong words with Ewan when next they were on the same plane if that was the case.

After Ewan managed to get himself off Dooku’s ship, he reminded himself. No sense distracting him and getting his body killed and Obi-Wan stuck here permanently.

Even though he hadn’t the first idea how they were going to go about getting switched back in the first place.

The kitchen was fully of activity and noise when he descended. Clara and Esther giggling in their chairs beside a small boy that he’d never seen before and he hoped this wasn’t another child that he would have to attempt to remember.

Angelina leaned over, tucking a napkin into the collar of the boys’ shirt and bussing a kiss against the top of his head.

“Mama,” the boy squirmed giggling louder and Angelina hugged him around the shoulders then released him and shoved cloths into the collars of his girls’ shirts.

“Ewan,” Jonny noticed him first, sounding pleased to see him he crossed the room in three steps and latched onto his arm. Pulling him across the room and depositing him firmly into the chair beside Clara, then himself drop into the one Ewan’s other side.

“Hungry?” Jude leaned over his shoulder, placing a full plate of food in front of him and Ewan raised a brow because how many people did Jude believe were going to be eating off his plate anyway?

“Jude’s pretty pleased with himself that he managed to actually cook the whole breakfast without once setting off the smoke alarm,” Jonny mock whispered, Jude smacked him upside the head softly and Jonny grinned and winked.

“I haven’t set off a smoke alarm in years,” Jude grumbled.

“And by years he means six months,” Jonny murmured under his breath.

Angelina laughed, Clara and Esther and the boy that was obviously her son somehow giggled and Obi-Wan coughed so as to not be the next person to get smacked up side the head.

He fingered the utensils to the right of his plate, and started eating silently. A small smile on his face as he did so.

The room was filled with warm energy, every person in it was pleased to see him and the only person that might not have been would have been that odious female that had stood Ewan’s doorway looking disapproving as Jude had told his girls a story.

“I’ve dismissed her,” Jude said softly, hovering behind him. Obi-Wan couldn’t figure out why he was standing there until Jonny heaved a heavy sigh and then nudging Angelina moved over a seat. Jude beamed and sat next to him.

“With all of us here and the Boy,” Jonny coughed and Jude scowled, Obi-Wan blinked because he was sure this was something that Ewan would know but Ewan wasn’t here and he was sort of clueless, “Hayden coming in a little over a week it seemed silly to have nanny’s here.”

“Jude and the girls have decided that you are going to the zoo today, if you feel up to it,” Angelina stated, her eyes stared at him and Obi-Wan tried to project feelings of stability and health at her. She didn’t appear to notice, just narrowed her eyes and cocked her head. “Maddox would like to go as well, if that’s okay with you.”

Obi-Wan glanced over at the boy, Maddox who was watching the conversation while he nibbled on a piece of bread. It had a purple tinge that was getting all over his hands as he ate.

“I’m sure that will be fine,” he said softly. Angelina smiled at him and he reflexively smiled back although beside him Jude had shuddered at the smile and Jonny was eyeing both of them with narrowed eyes.

He wondered if his first question to Ewan should be if he was straight and if so was he involved with anyone. With the way that Jude had been hovering, much like Anakin would have been if he’d been home, he’d just assumed that Jude was Ewan’s Anakin.

That could possibly have been a wrong assumption, especially considering there were children.
