*Grins* This story is done. And actually the majority of it has been completed for like a month now, I've just been nitpicking and forgetting to post. I kind of like this writing the whole story (or at least a large chunk of it) before posting. It doesn't make me feel like crap when the muses go on an extended vacation and I'm left floundering for words.

Possession - Chapter 8

He lay on his back, Lana curled up on her side facing away from him and he knew she was awake even though she hadn’t moved a single muscle.

“You should just go talk to him,” her voice was muffled, probably by the pillow and she’d told him the same thing three times since he’d stalked into Dean’s room and snarled words like ‘cheating’ and ‘murder’ and ‘I’ll chain you to the fucking bed if I have to’.

She’d kept him occupied after that, leaving Dean with his brother, while she’d kept him from having every woman in the States with the name of Cassie hunted down and killed.

“I have nothing else to say,” he said coldly.

She sighed, turning over to face him. Long, dark hair hanging over her face like a veil of sorts. She looked disappointed in him and he didn’t understand why.

He hadn’t been the one to cheat. That had all been Dean.

It rankled some that they wouldn’t even have found out about it if his brother hadn’t mentioned it in the first place.

And Bobby, he hoped that Dean didn’t count him as a close friend because as soon as Dean was healed enough to not need Bobby and Sam protecting him from whatever it was after them, Bobby was gone.

“He’s not Jason, Luthor. You can’t keep treating him like he is.”

And that was the crux of the issue.

Bobby hadn’t even been grinning when he’d said that, just stated it like it was a fact that Lex himself had forgotten somewhere along the way.

It was so easy to forget that the man lying in bed across the hall from them wasn’t Jason. So easy to forget that while this man had all the same memories as Jason he was definitely a totally different person.

One with a different past and different loves and he wondered if Dean had met Cassie before he’d been taken by Jason or after Jason had been banished.

He pushed the blankets aside and sat up.

A glance at the clock showed it to be 2:30, a half hour later then he normally visited Dean.

“Don’t come back until the two of you can be in the same room together and be civil,” Lana muttered. “I don’t like having to play mediator between the two of you, that’s not my role.”

Lex kissed her shoulder and stood, pulling on his robe as he stared down at her. She rolled over onto her back and smiled up at him. It would be so easy to climb back into that bed and drown himself in her, he’d done it before. She’d done it before.

He could feel her eyes on his back as he walked across the room and he gave her thirty minutes before she was hovering outside Dean’s room eavesdropping.

Possibly less then that, because she was already awake and had a vested interest in the outcome.

He pushed the door to Dean’s room open, stopping suddenly at the sight of the doctor standing beside his bed.

“Is something…?”

“He’s having a rough night, you should come back in the morning,” the doctor didn’t even turn, just continued to stare down at Dean.

There was a faint hint of anger that sounded like it was directed at him and he wondered if their fight had done something to cause Dean to backslide.

Lex nodded once and turned. Something twinged in the back of his mind and he thought something’s wrong, something’s wrong.

Hand on the door handle, he stopped, back stiffening.

Because Dean’s eyes had been open.

He turned, slowly and he saw Dean staring at him. Eyes wide, fear and pain in them.

The doctor turned, moved a step away from the bed and Lex saw that the front of the t-shirt that Dean had been wearing was red.

It had been some stone-grey one when Lex had been in there earlier snarling hateful things at him.

“You don’t listen very well, do you,” the doctor didn’t even move a muscle and Lex slid far to the right, hip and elbow hitting the dresser and he would definitely have a bruise in the morning.

He opened his mouth to ask ‘what the hell do you think you’re doing’ and go to Dean and found that he couldn’t move.

“I have no interest in you other than the fact that you harbor the Winchester’s,” the doctor walked up to him, eyes dark black and Lex’s eyes widened.

“What the hell?” Lex managed, the doctor ignored him.

“I should kill you for that alone.”

“Don’t,” Dean’s voice was weak, barely there.

“You hate him and he still protects you,” the doctor smirked at Lex. “Isn’t love grand.”

“You hurt him and I’ll…”

“You’ll what? Bleed on me? You’re not much of a warrior now, are you Dean? All alone, you could have ended all this but instead you talked Sam out of doing what needed to be done and now your dad can’t even look at you. He at least was able to tolerate you before,” the doctor walked slowly to the bed, swinging his legs up so he was sitting right beside Dean. Lex snarled inaudibly.

“It was because you had your mothers’ eyes you know, now though… Now you get to start the hunt all over and trust me when I say that He won’t make it easy for you,” he leaned down, close to Dean’s ear and Lex strained to hear.

Because later someone would ask and he needed to know what was being said so they would know how to undo the damage.

“You’ll still fight for them even though you know the truth now. It’s quite sad I think, all that family loyalty placed in a family that could care less about it.”

Lex struggled against the invisible bonds and wondered if calling for help would be considered weak, and if it came whether or not Bobby and Sam would be able to do anything.

“Your family doesn’t need you, and if it had been just your dad and Sam in that cabin, they’d be free now.”

“Get the hell away from my brother,” an angry snarl and Lex shifted his eyes to see Sam in the doorway looking like a pissed off angel with a gun in his hands

“Sammy, we were just talking about you,” the doctor went to stand up and Sam pulled the trigger on the gun.

The shot went wide and with all their talk about ‘hunting’ he would have thought that Sam could have at least hit what he was aiming for.

“You missed,” the doctor sounded amused and a little surprised.

“The next shot won’t,” Bobby said, coming up alongside Sam in the doorway. He had his own gun in his hand and they stood side by side.

“Now you’ve got a choice, I can either do the exorcism, I’m getting pretty good at the Latin if I do say so myself or…”

Lex could move his arms and legs again, pushed himself away from the dresser and opened his mouth.

He only managed to get a rather paltry “What the…” out before the doctor threw back his head and some black cloud was expelled from his body. And vanished.

“Now that’s something you don’t see every day,” Lex murmured.

“Sammy, dude. You totally need to leave the whole intimidation thing up to me next time,” Dean coughed, and it sounded like he was gasping for air.

Sam and Lex ran for the bed, the doctor was blinking and looking around and finally looked down at Dean, eyes widening and then ran from the room. Yelling for Amy.

There was a crash and he knew that the door to the nurses’ room had just been flung open; a string of profanities that would have made a sailor blush followed, which showed how displeased Amy was about being woken up.

“Why didn’t you just shoot him man?” Dean asked, wincing even though Lex and Sam were gentle in their attempt to get him upright and get his shirt.

“We need the doctor Dean, I couldn’t just put a bullet in his head,” Sam grumbled. “Besides it wouldn’t have done any good anyway, I mean Meg fell from a building and ended up trying to kill us, there was nothing to say that the same wouldn’t happen to the doctor.”

“You could have just done the exorcism and not announced your attention to do it in the first place,” Dean muttered. “And what kind of wussy ass demon just leaves after a threat that lame anyway.”

Sam rolled his eyes. “The next time we run into one I’ll be sure to ask.”

A gasp from the door and Lex turned to see that Lana had entered.

“Lex I thought you were just coming to talk to him?” she sounded infuriated and a little disappointed in him.

“Not my fault, he was like this when I got here,” Lex muttered. He had blood on his hands and Sam held the t-shirt in his hands and Dean’s eyes were barely open and they probably shouldn’t have let him talk because now he was silent, his eyes were closed and he wasn’t moving at all.

Lex laid a hand against his chest and let out a slow breath when he could feel proof that Dean was still breathing.

Still alive.

Amy and the doctor pushed past Lana, shoving Lex and Sam away from the bed.

“You need to leave,” Amy sounded emphatic and with a needle in her hand nobody disagreed with her though Lex wanted to try.

He certainly didn’t want the doctor who was responsible for Dean’s new injuries anywhere near him.

The door closed when they were in the hallway and they were all staring at each other.

Bobby cleared his throat and then everybody stared at him.

“So I’m guessing nobody put protective sigils up on Dean’s room then?”

******************************************************************************

They argued for about ten minutes at whose fault it was that every room in the house had been protected but Dean’s.

Amy hadn’t known she needed to do it, and when she’d found out that it was a demon that put Dean in the shape that he was in she’d assumed that Sam or John or Bobby had done it.

Sam had assumed that Amy had done it since she was supposed to have been ‘in the know’.

Bobby had just grumbled at them all and asked why they hadn’t bothered to just check each others work; he always checked the work of someone new that he was working with.

He checked John’s work just because John got so irritated with him for doing so. When he told Sam this Sam laughed, Lex just rolled his eyes and wondered if it was too late to call for the men in white jackets.

He was on a first name basis with some of them.

“Everyone is at fault, how do we keep that… thing or something like it from coming back and doing more damage?”

Because that was what it had done.

It had come into his home, where Dean was supposed to be protected and unraveled every step toward recovery that Dean had made.

“Protective sigils on each entrance to the room, one in each corner…” Sam looked over at Bobby, Bobby looked over at Lex.

“How do you feel about us painting a Seal up on the ceiling in Dean’s room?” Bobby took his hat off, ran a hand over his head and then put it back on.

“Do you really think we need to go that in depth?” Sam asked.

Lex shook his head. He didn’t even want to know what a ‘Seal’ was, he had a feeling he was better off not knowing.

“Will it keep Dean from getting hurt again?”

“Well it’s a protective circle, if something manages to get into the room it’ll be trapped there until…” Sam drifted off but unspoken was that Dean would not be left alone until such time as he could defend himself.

Which at this rate was going to be another few weeks at least.

Lex waved hand. “Whatever, as long as it can be painted over.”

Not that he ever planned on selling the house but the last thing he needed was to make the decision 20 years down the road and be pegged as some sort of Satanist.

“We can paint it the same color as the ceiling is now, as long as it’s there and drawn correctly it won’t matter if it’s visible to the naked eye,” Bobby said, Sam looked like he wanted to ask questions but changed his mind.

“Sigils first, then the trap,” Sam said instead.

Lex turned away, headed toward Dean’s room and tried to ignore the fact that they were talking about carving things into the wood.

Lana was sitting with Dean, Amy was hovering like Dean was her only child and he was five minutes from the death and the doctor had tried to quit because he remembered being the one to cause the new injuries on Dean’s body even though he wasn’t sure how he’d done them.

Lex wanted to let him, but it would be 24 hours before he could get another doctor out there and until then…

But once his replacement came the man was gone, Lex was tempted to not even given him a good recommendation though both Amy and Sam had said that it wasn’t his fault.

He pushed open the door.

Lana wasn’t sitting on the bed, Amy had vetoed that immediately because Dean had a habit of curling into Lana or Lex when they were sitting on the bed and at the moment he needed to not move at all, instead she was sitting in a chair pulled as close to the bed as she could get it.

Her hand was resting on top of Dean’s and she looked up when Lex entered, Amy smiled at them both and even though she didn’t leave she tried to make herself as invisible as possible.

It would have to do for the moment, because whatever that thing in the doctor had been, Sam and Bobby and Amy had the best chance of being able to recognize it and then fight it.

“Do you want to tell me what the hell happened now?” Lana asked, she was still angry. And she knew that she’d been lied to, that fact, coupled with Dean’s new injuries… Lex knew he wasn’t going to have sex at any point in the near future.

“It’s a long, complicated story and maybe I’m not the best person to tell it,” Lex said. And he wasn’t, because parts of it he still didn’t really get.

“Why don’t you just go over the story and if I have any questions I can ask someone else to fill in the blanks.”

Lex sighed… and then started talking.

******************************************************************************

She wasn’t taking it well.

Actually that was probably an understatement and Dean was quite happy that he’d kept his eyes closed and not let them know that he was awake.

If Lex weren’t so distracted by Lana freaking out on him he probably would have noticed. As it was he was to busy trying to keep her from clawing his eyes out.

“How could you just let me sit here and think he was Jason?!” he’d never heard her that infuriated before. Never heard Lana speak with that amount of scorn or venom to or about anyone.

“He is Jason, or as much of Jason as we’re going to be able to have,” Lex stated. If he opened his eyes he knew that Lex would look just as pissed off as Lana sounded.

Years of playing mediator between Sam and dad made him want to open his eyes and tell them both to calm down, to send them to separate corners until they could figure out what to do, what they needed.

But he couldn’t offer them what it seemed they wanted.

Which seemed to be Jason and playing comatose was definitely his best plan right now.

Once they left, once Lana stormed out of the room Lex would follow and he would figure out what to do. He couldn’t leave just yet, Sam would have a coronary if he mentioned moving and Amy seemed the type to drug him and tie him down if he tried to do something she deemed idiotic

They didn’t want him. He’d known that, he’d known that from the moment that his dad and Bobby and Caleb and Jimmy had done that exorcism, he couldn’t believe he’d let himself forget that fact.

But he’d allowed himself to hope, Lex had known the truth, the whole truth and had still appeared to want him. He’d let himself believe that Lana would still want him once she found out the truth.

But she didn’t.

And now that she didn’t want him, the pale imitation of Jason Teague, Lex wouldn’t want him either.

He’d have to distance himself, make himself forget what he felt for them. Maybe then when they forced him to leave it wouldn’t feel like he was tearing his heart out and leaving it on the bed as a going away present for them.

He should never have let himself hope, let himself get comfortable here. People like him didn’t get to have lives like this.

“You all must have been laughing at me,” Lana snarled and stormed from the room, door slamming behind her.

Lex sighed, deeply, like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and didn’t like it at all.

“You’ll stay?” he asked.

“Yes sir,” Amy’s voice was quiet. Disapproving and Lex sighed again; Dean opened his eyes when he heard the door close softly after him.

Amy looked at him and he stared back, wondering what he looked like that would cause someone to look at him with such pity in their eyes.

“I’m sure…” she started and he just stared at her.

Because she couldn’t really be planning on telling him that Lana didn’t have a right to be angry, and it hadn’t escaped his notice that Lex had only been trying to calm Lana down, that he hadn’t put to voice his feelings for Dean.

Most likely because Lex didn’t have any and the only person that had been made a fool here had been him.

“Hey what happened? Lana just ran out of here crying and Lex went after her looking like he’d rather be doing anything else,” Sam entered the room looking scared of what he might find, his expression cleared when he saw Dean laying on the bed, eyes open. Obviously still breathing and very much alive.

Amy looked at him and Dean stared right back at her.

“Lana knows the truth,” Dean stated. Sam frowned, obviously not able to determine from Dean’s tone if that was good news or bad news.

“Dean?”

“She didn’t take it very well,” Amy said softly.

That is the understatement of the year,” Dean murmured under his breath. Sam heard him of course; Sam heard all the things that Dean didn’t want him to hear. It was kind of annoying actually.

“Its fine Sammy,” Dean closed his eyes, tapped his fingers against the bed. Tried to ignore the fact that he could feel Sam staring at him in pity.

Pity from Sam.

God how the mighty had fallen.

“Honestly it’s no less then what I expected, I’m not Jason after all. Lana doesn’t know Dean Winchester. She certainly doesn’t want him.”

He felt the bed dip and he knew without opening his eyes that Sam had sat down on the bed next to him.

“You don’t deserve this.”

“I’m not him Sammy, that’s who they want. Not me,” never me. And had he actually thought that Lex and Lana would want him when Sammy and dad who he’d had for his entire life didn’t? Obviously the blood loss had impaired brain activity as well as knocking him flat on his ass. “Actually it just makes it easier in the long run, at least this way neither one of them will fight us when it’s time to go. They’ll probably be glad to show us the door.”

Sam touched his arm lightly.

“I think you’re wrong about that.”

You made my heart break when Dean was thinking that they didn't want him. What happened to getting close to him until they were as close to him as they were with Jason? But at least it's out in the open that he is definitely NOT Jason.

Haha, it's ironic how the only room that's NOT protected is the one that NEEDS to be protected.

Thank you again for the update. I love it despite its angst.

I like the idea of Dean with people who'd be willing to know him, and this particular combination is an interesting one. Nice.
