Possession - Chapter 2

Lex had his head in his hands when Lana came out of the bathroom, towel wrapped securely around her body. Another one in her hands as she rubbed it briskly over her hair.

The hospital had a set of VIP rooms on the top floor of the hospital for families that could afford to pay to not be separated from their loved ones.

Not that they’d explicitly asked for money in return for being allowed use of them, but Lex had made it clear that they would be sleeping somewhere in the hospital and if it was on the floor of Jason’s room then they hadn’t cared.

Obviously Dr. Munson hadn’t liked that plan and had insisted that they use the suites for the duration of their stay. Which Lana hoped was only another twelve hours or so.

The pilots were keeping the plane ready to go so that the moment that Lex called and told them that they were on their way that they’d be ready to leave. Lana would be unsurprised if they were sleeping in the plane waiting for the call.

She was just glad that they hadn’t been forced to stay in a hotel, and even with them being in the hospital two floors up she still didn’t like the idea of leaving Jason alone, unprotected in a hospital room.

Especially since they had no idea what exactly had put him there in the first place.

She draped the damp towel over the back of a chair and moved to sit next to Lex on the bed. Resting a hand high up on his leg, he covered it with his hand but didn’t look at her.

“He’s going to be okay,” she murmured, she leaned into his side, resting wet hair against his shoulder and he glanced over at her.

“You don’t know that,” Lex dropped a kiss on the top of her head and stood with a sigh.

“You keep telling me that he is, are you calling yourself a liar now?” Lana managed a smile at the expression on Lex’s face. She focused on that and didn’t allow her mind to think about how pale Jason had been in that bed, how a nurse had been in there to change bandages.

How there’d been IV’s and oxygen masks and machines beeping while Jason had been silent and still.

She’d almost managed to convince herself that it was some big con that Jason was pulling to get back into their good graces; she’d allowed herself to believe that until the moment they’d walked into the hospital room.

Then it was no longer a joke, no longer Jason trying to pull a fast one on them.

It was Jason hurt, Jason not waking up.

Jason who might have died before they’d even known that he was actually still alive.

“I’m going to go back down and sit with him for a while,” Lex leaned over her, pressed a soft kiss to her lips, hand gentle on the side of her head.

“Let me get dressed and I’ll go with you,” she said it even though she knew Lex would make her stay away.

When it had been the three of them before there had been times when they’d needed alone time with each other, Lana had tried to respect that there were times when Lex needed Jason and Jason needed Lex and they didn’t need her.

She’d tried to respect that, and sometimes she almost succeeded, because there’d been times when she’d wanted nothing more than to be alone with either one of them and they’d done their best to make sure she got what she needed.

She’d had a years worth of alone time with Lex, it was only fair that Lex get time with Jason. Besides she knew once they returned to Smallville she’d get her own time with the other man and Lex would allow it no questions asked.

“Get some sleep,” he said softly. “I hope to have us out of here as early in the morning as they’ll allow.”

Lex stopped by the nurses’ station to check to make sure that Jason’s condition hadn’t changed in the two hours he’d been gone and was offered a cup of coffee.

“Its better than the machine's,” a pretty young nurse, blonde hair, blue eyes smiled at him and if Lana had been standing next to him she would have been growling at the blatant invitation in those eyes.

“Thank you,” he didn’t smile back, just accepted the cup and walked away.

Cassidy had pulled up a chair and was sitting across from the door to Jason’s room, eyes intent on the door though every so often he seemed to be scanning the hallway.

Lex followed the path of his eyes and stopped suddenly at the sight of a familiar face.

Older man, baseball cap, beard.

He’d come by two days before hell had broken loose in Smallville to talk to Jason about a car, an Impala of all things and Lex had just raised an eyebrow when Jason had mentioned buying one.

He’d not pressed when Jason had muttered something under his breath about keeping somebody happy.

Lex had let it go and then had forgotten all about it, mostly because he didn’t want to know who else Jason was trying to keep happy. At the time he’d thought that he and Lana had kept Jason to busy for him to fuck around on them.

“Anything of note?” Lex asked. His eyes remained on the old man though the old man seemed to be studiously avoiding making any sort of eye contact with him.

Cassidy followed his gaze and shook his head.

“He’s just been hanging out, he disappears every so often. Hasn’t tried to go into Mr. Teague’s room though.”

Lex fastened his eyes on the old mans back as he turned and walked away, eyes following him until he turned the corner and was out of sight.

“Keep it that way please, it would be nice if we could make it back to Smallville without a confrontation with someone that Jason may or may not have pissed off at one point in the past.”

He stood there for a moment, waiting to see if the old man would return, when he didn’t he glanced down at Cassidy who nodded at him and then he turned and walked into Jason’s room.

The door closed behind him and he thought that he might get used to seeing Jason looking like death about never.

“Crap,” Bobby swore. He would have used stronger language but he was in a hospital and his momma had beat into him at a young age that there were two places where cussin’ wasn’t allowed.

Church and the hospital.

Sam had pushed a cellphone in his hand before him and his daddy had been moved and the Winchester’s being separated when one of them was in as bad a shape as Dean was just seemed entirely too wrong in Bobby’s eyes.

And a little suspicious to, he would have thought that Dean would have been moved before Sam and John, but Dean hadn’t been stable and the doctors had been mumbling something about a shortage of rooms or some such nonsense.

Bobby stared at the phone and pressed the little bitty numbers with fingers that seemed like they were two sizes too big to use it safely and glanced around the corner as he waited for someone to pick up.

He was hoping for Sam because he certainly didn’t want to tell John that he’d just spotted Lex Luthor going into his oldest boys’ room, especially since John was some miles away and in no shape himself to put a halt to it.

Bobby hadn’t even managed to get close enough yet to put protective symbols on the doorway casings or the window sills.

And if the demon community was as tight knit as those that hunted them, the news that the Winchester’s were down for the count was going to draw all sorts of interested parties.

The only thing that hadn’t had him tackling Luthor before he walked into Dean’s room was the fact that they were almost 90% sure that the witch had used Dean as a surrogate for her demon spawn of a son in the first place was almost surely dead.

90% surety was pretty good; they’d gone on less before, but still… the way their luck as a group was going. Lex Luthor might be the least of their worries if Genevieve was still alive and figured out that she might still able to use Dean.

“Bobby?” John’s voice on the other end, sounding just a sight better than he had the last time that Bobby had got him on the phone instead of Sam.

“Can you think of any reason why Lex Luthor would be going into your boys’ hospital room?”

It wasn’t often that John Winchester was speechless; Bobby had to take life’s small pleasures when they were given to him because tomorrow a werewolf might tear off his leg or a vampire might rip out his throat.

Or the demon that was stalking John and his boys might send some pretty blond girl to slit his throat.

“Lex Luthor is in Dean’s room?” John finally asked faintly. Bobby could hear Sam on the other end of the phone; at least two of the three Winchester’s were in one place together.

Protecting them while they were down would have been so much easier if they’d all been kept in one place.

But they hadn’t so Missouri had taken on John and Sam, while Bobby had gone to Dean. Jimmy Campbell would be joining him a few days once he wrapped up a poltergeist in St. Louis.

John had called in favors from everyone and no one had turned him down. Everyone was descending and only part of it was because Pastor Jim and Caleb were dead and there was no telling who would be next.

There was also the hope that if they were in the same boat as the Winchester’s that everyone would circle the camp to protect them while they were down.

“That’s what I said,” Bobby rubbed a hand over his face. Peered around the corner again.

There was that same man sitting across from Dean’s door, every so often he’d glance down the way that Bobby had been standing.

He swore again.

“Dean’s pendant?”

“Genevieve Teague is dead. There’s no one left alive that knew about Jason to do the spell. I think he’s safe from possession again,” Bobby almost swore again, because if he could hear the doubt in his own voice he knew that John could as well.

There’d been no body found after all and they’d all seen stranger things then the dead walking among them before. Getting that pendant back around Dean’s neck as soon as freakin’ possible was his first objective

“But evidently not safe from Lex Luthor thinking that he still is Jason,” John sounded tired and Bobby could hear Sam talking fast and low though he couldn’t make out the words.

“I thought they brought you all in together?”

“They did, there was some shapeshifter incident, the thing was killed while still in Dean’s form. Dean was declared dead some months ago. They never got around to fixing it,” John’s voice was taking on that tone that warned that he was about three seconds from losing his temper so every one take cover.

Sam’s tone at least sounded apologetic and Bobby wished he could make out what the younger man was saying because he was sure he was only getting half the story from John.

“So he was admitted as a John Doe then, Luthor must’ve had some detectives on the look out for anyone matching his description and they snapped him up as soon as he was admitted,” Bobby mused, he swore again. “Well doesn’t this just cock things up all well and good.”

“Sammy and I should be released sometime tomorrow. We’ll be back down there as soon as we are and get this all straightened out. Watch out for him till then.”

Bobby went to sputter something but John was gone and he glared at the phone for lack of a better target.

“I’m pretty sure your boy’s gonna be gone by then John.”

He swore again. And wondered if Lex Luthor would believe him if he told him that Jason had been possessing Dean and wasn’t there any more.

Or if Luthor would just have him committed and take Dean anyway.
