FIC: BTVS - Warrior of Light; Warrior of Dark - Ch 16

And hey, hell hasn’t even frozen over.

More Williamverse, specifically more of Warrior of Light; Warrior of Dark.

Pairings are totally up in the air at the moment, but at the moment they’re William/Buffy, Darla/Gunn, Riley/Faith, Xander/Anya.

They could end up changing, especially since we’re only about maybe at the halfway point.

This includes the snippet I posted some months back as well...

TITLE: Warrior of Light; Warrior of Dark
RATING: R-NC-17
PAIRINGS: William/Buffy, Darla/Gunn, Riley/Faith, Xander/Anya
AUTHOR: Melanie
DISCLAIMER: I own nothing at all, least of all those contained within.

The last time we left them, Darla had just given birth to a bouncing baby boy (Connor) and the group, now including Dru and Xander were getting ready to flee Angelus in a van.

Chapter 16

The baby was wrapped in a thick blanket that Gunn had pulled from his seemingly bottomless backpack. William was seriously considering asking him if he’d planned out food as well.

Buffy led the way through the darkness, William behind her clasping her hand tightly. The others moved as silently as they could behind them. Druscilla bringing up the rear. Guarding their backs.

He could hear Darla murmuring quietly to the baby held tightly to her chest. He knew that she’d planned on dying, on dusting herself to save the baby she held so carefully against her.

He knew without a doubt that Buffy and Gunn had probably nodded at her plans and then worked around them. Both intent, for their own reasons, on keeping the vampiress alive.

“Almost there,” Buffy’s voice was low and William strained to hear it. He heard Dru make a soft noise from the rear and figured that the comment hadn’t been for him.

He squeezed her hand before releasing it; reaching out with one hand to steady Xander as he stumbled behind him, cursing softly. He was hushed by Faith who was hobbling along with no assistance. They were a ragtag group and there was no way that they were letting Buffy out of their sight.

He briefly wondered if he should call Giles and Dawn and warn them to pull out the extra blankets and make up some beds because it looked as if they were to have company soon.

They’d have to rent a car, there was no way that they’d all fit into Dru’s. Unless there was some illegal sitting or someone was stuffed into a trunk.

The light surprised him. When Buffy had ‘almost there’ she really meant almost there.

She touched the door softly, a glance behind where everyone was gathered before she pulled the stake from the band of her pants. Dru shouldered her way through to stand on her other side, effectively moving William out of the line of danger and placing the two vampiress’ directly in it.

He tried to grab her arm, he and either Riley or Gunn should be there. With the light leaking through the door both of them could be dust before they leapt out of the way.

He hated that they were both intent on protecting him when Darla was cradling a defenseless infant to her.

With a nod to Dru Buffy opened the door quickly, when no one appeared to challenge them, to try and tear Buffy and Darla from them an audible sigh of relief went through the whole group. Including those who didn’t need it.

The light it seemed was artificial, the tunnel leading into some sort of underground parking garage.

“Riley,” Buffy waved the young man through, digging in her pocket for keys that she tossed to the male as he passed. He caught them one handed, a stake held in the other.

“We’re not all going to fit in my car,” Dru commented silently.

“We’ve got our own method of transport,” Buffy said absently, Will could tell that she was straining to hear something, not really paying attention to them as she waited.

The sound of a vehicle starting caused a grin to appear and a hand motion that he didn’t understand but that had Gunn, Darla and Faith moving quickly to follow her out the door.

Xander shrugged and followed, William and Dru hesitated, exchanging a look before following after them.

They were the last ones there, clambering into the back of the van that Riley probably already had in gear as he waited impatiently for someone to close the door.

Buffy was in shotgun, a map in her hands.

“So where are we going now?” William leaned between the seats, trying to peer at the map to determine their destination.

“I thought you wanted to head back to Sunnydale luv,” Buffy shoved a pair of sunglasses on her face even though she didn’t need them in the garage.

“You’re coming back to Sunnydale?” he asked in surprise.

“I thought that was the whole reason that you came here to fetch me,” she stared at him, her eyes hidden behind the dark lenses so he couldn’t tell what she was thinking or feeling or really anything that would help him determine if she was going back out of her own free will or because it was what he wanted. “You wanted to bring me back to the Hellmouth.”

“Well yeah,” he rubbed at his head. “I just never thought you’d actually voluntarily do it, I thought for sure that we were going to have to lock you in the trunk or something.”

“Yeah well... missed the bit you know,” she shrugged. She touched his cheek lightly, ignoring the curious eyes watching, ignoring the fact that Dru was watching, she smirked at him. “Among other things.”

William wondered if this was some sort of weird alternate reality that he’d been sucked into. He could tell by the look on Xander’s face that he was wondering the same thing.

They were in a van that was a bit worse for wear, everyone sort of leaning into one another when Riley made a turn or speed up or stopped.

He wondered what would happen to Dru’s car. They’d just left it at the hotel and while Dru hadn’t said anything the glare that she’d shot at Buffy when Buffy wasn’t looking told him that she was going to blame the loss of her car on the other vampiress.

Buffy hadn’t said two words to Dru since they’d loaded into the van, William was gratified for small favors since they were in a small confined space and the dust of one of them staking the other might hurt the newborn babies lungs.

An hour in Buffy had given up her seat and navigating duties to Faith, stating that the young woman needed the space to stretch out her broken leg. If it had been the old Buffy, the evil one that he’d fought during his Junior year in high school he thought she might have left Faith behind.

This new improved Buffy, now with her own sidekicks, had a ‘leave no man behind’ philosophy and he wasn’t sure where it had come from.

That new Buffy had curled up next to Darla and her baby, Gunn on Darla’s other side. Every so often she’d reach out and stroke a hand down the baby that Darla was holding protectively to her breast. William wondered what they’d do when Connor needed to be fed.

He didn’t think that Darla was breast feeding and if she was he was pretty sure that he didn’t want to see it.

“Buffy,” Riley’s voice was quiet, Buffy climbed over Darla speaking soft apologetic words as she moved past. Darla smiled wanly up at her, looking tired and happy and curled into Gunn. Buffy smirked down at William, touching the top of his head softly before hovering finally over the back of Riley’s seat.

“Fuck,” Buffy barely whispered, William frowned and in an easy move turned to look out the window, eyes widening in alarm at what he saw.

Damn but Angelus could obviously move fast when he wanted to.

Line of cars across the road, it was barely dark but obviously deemed safe enough for the vampires to have a barricade up across the road blocking their route. “Faith?”

“We can turn around, there’s a dirt road about a mile back that take us right to the interstate if Riley can do some creative driving.”

“How creative are we looking for?” Riley tapped his fingers against the steering wheel as he waited for Buffy’s decision.

“Well I don’t think the road is so much a road as maybe a goat path,” Faith smirked. “But it’s on the map and I don’t think Angelus would think we’re suicidal enough to take it. It’s probably going to be kind of rough.”

“They don’t raise goats here,” Gunn called from behind them. William bit his tongue to keep from asking him how he knew where they were in order to be able to say that.

The silence felt like an oppressive weight as Buffy’s eyes stayed intent on the line of bodies blocking the road. He wondered if she could sense Angelus amongst them and then figured he couldn’t be.

If Angelus had been out there William had no doubt that he would have tried to call Buffy and Darla to him and since neither had tried to rip the doors off the van yet maybe Angelus hadn’t made it this far yet.

“Do it,” Buffy ordered softly. She blinked and braced herself against Riley’s seat as he executed what William was pretty sure was an illegal U-turn. A glance out the back window showed figures breaking away from the line and running after them.

“Don’t stop for anything.”

Riley snorted. “I’m not an idiot Buffy.”

Faith choked back a snort of her own and William saw Buffy bite her lip to hide a smile, a glance back at Gunn showed the same thing. William wondered what Riley had done.

“You stopped the car and that demon tried to behead Gunn,” Darla called out.

“It was a little old lady, how was I supposed to know?”

“Well the fact that she was carrying an ax? That should have been a dead giveaway,” Gunn muttered, he rubbed his neck like he was checking to make sure that his neck and head were still firmly attached.

“It could have been a gift for someone,” Riley grumbled defensively. “It had a bow on it.”

“How many little old ladies do you know that give an ax as a gift? Grandparents of serial killers notwithstanding.”

Buffy rolled her eyes and Faith grabbed Riley’s arm.

“That’s the road.”

Riley slowed and peered at the turn. “That’s not a road,” he stated emphatically.

“I told you that it was going to be a little rough.”

“A little rough, we’re going to be lucky to have any shocks left when we get off it, not to mention our exhaust system.”

“We don’t really need them do we?” Faith asked innocently, Riley glared at her and Buffy laughed softly. William rolled his eyes and exchanged a look with Xander and then braced himself against one side of the van when Riley made the turn.

And hit the first bump.

Gunn went flying against the back door; Darla hummed quietly and cuddled Connor close to her, quieting his cries with a soft touch while she tried to brace herself on air.

Dru ended up being tossed against Xander and she glared at him as if the fact that they’d had to take this road was all his fault.

Xander swallowed once, his expression turning decidedly green as he closed his eyes panting softly.

William remembered seconds before the words were mumbled that they should have brought a bag or a trashcan. Maybe Gunn had one in that backpack of his that seemed to defy the law of physics.

“I think I’m going to be sick.”

Angelus scowled, growling at the vampire cowering before him. He should have sent his best men, should have sent warriors instead of children like this one.

Buffy and Darla had slipped through his fingers. They’d seen the little welcome home that he’d arranged for them and they’d ran. If he’d been a lesser man he might have been offended by the fact that they were fighting him.

As it was he was looking forward to killing the Slayer when he brought Buffy home. He’d do it quickly, as a gift for her. He hadn’t yet decided what to do with Darla yet, she was his now, not Druscilla’s and the child.

His child. And Darla had tried to keep the babe from him; she’d have to be punished for that of course.

He’d already decided that he’d raise it with Buffy; an apology for having got Darla with child in the first place, although his mate couldn’t throw stones since she’d dallied with the Slayer after all.

They train it to be a self-sufficient, train it to have no remorse. Train it to be like them only able to walk in the sun.

His eyes and ears in a world he couldn’t walk in any longer. The stars had sang to him and told him what to do.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” the words were repeated over and over again in a half ‘please don’t stake me’ tone that was beginning to annoy him.

“Get up,” he snarled.

The vampire came to his feet slowly, he was young Angelus mused. He didn’t even have enough control to transform from his vampire visage into the human mask that would allow him to walk among the idiots that lived in this city.

The stake appeared from nowhere, thrust through the young ones heart from behind. Angelus arched a brow and smirked.

Being young was no excuse for failure though, he had ones younger that could have done a better job. Could have succeeded where this one had failed.

“What would you have us do?”

Being young hadn’t tainted this one after all and Angelus crooked a finger beckoning him forward. Of course this one had been teetering on the edge of evil and not evil for years. It had only taken a little push for him to fall over that edge.

Druscilla would probably punish him when she found out what he’d done. She’d always been so creative with her punishments, he’d have to get rid of that soul of hers first though.

He came forward slowly; vampire fading into human until the only way Angelus knew that this boy was one of them was by the way his blood called out to him.

It was intoxicating.

He knelt slowly at Angelus’ feet, head resting on his knee and Angelus allowed a hand to pet him almost absently. Buffy had been like this once, his pretty girl had knelt at his feet and hungered for his touch and been his and not the Slayers.

“They’re taking them back to Sunnydale,” Angelus murmured, eyes hazy and blank. Pools of black and he allowed his fingers to tangle in soft hair. “Bring my girls home Lindsey.”
